Gandara, Bergmann lead Bucs to 8-0 win over Colgate

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Cheyenne Gandara pitched her first collegiate shutout and Stephanie Bergmann connected on a game-high three RBI as Charleston Southern topped Colgate 8-0 on the final day of the CSU Tournament.

Gandara (3-3) went the distance scattering three hits around nine strikeouts as the freshman right-hander pitched her way out of trouble in both the first and sixth innings in picking up her third win of the season. Brooke Holcomb closed out the game with a walk-off double down the left field line with none out, driving in Amanda Matsumoto for the final run to close out the weekend

Bergmann led the CSU offense on the day going 2-for-2 from the plate with three RBI and a run scored, while Georgi DeLio had a double and two runs scored. Morgan Dowdy added a two-run double in the sixth inning to cap the Buccaneers offense on the afternoon.

Charleston Southern improved to 10-9-1 overall on the season with the victory, while Colgate fell to 0-5 overall with the loss.

The Buccaneers jumped out of the gates with three runs in the bottom of the first as Matsumoto crossed the plate on Stephanie Sbardella's single up the middle. With none out in the inning, CSU loaded the bases as Jessica Brock reached on a walk and DeLio reached on an infield single as the Bucs threatened to break the game open. Natalie Yonan brought in the second run of the inning in drawing a four pitch walk from Colgate starter Brigit Ieuter (0-3) and Bergmann drove in the final run of the frame with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring DeLio to put the Bucs ahead 3-0 after the first.

Gandara cruised through the second and the third innings as Charleston Southern pushed across another run in the bottom of the third frame. DeLio led off the inning with a double, coming around to cross the plate on Bergmann's two-out single up the middle to put the score at 4-0.

The Bucs added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth with Dowdy providing the big blast in her first at-bat of the season as the senior pitcher connected on a double to the fence in left field driving in Bergmann and Brittany McPherson on the play. Bergmann added her third RBI of the game one batter before, driving in Natalie Yonan on an infield single to stake the Bucs to the 7-0 advantage.

Colgate threatened to take one back in the top of the sixth inning as Tera Vaughn reached on a fielding error with two outs. An infield single Jennifer Martin pushed Vaughn over to third base, but Gandara recorded her ninth strikeout of the day, catching Alex Gadiano looking at strike three to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, CSU pushed across their walk-off run as Lexie Vanada drew a walk to lead off the frame. With Matsumoto back in to run, Sbardella was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out before Holcomb connected on the 2-1 pitch for a double down the line, closing out the CSU win.

Charleston Southern heads back on the road this week as the Buccaneers travel to South Carolina on Tuesday night, taking on the Gamecocks at 5 p.m. The Bucs continue on the road for their final tournament as they head out west to the UCLA/CSUN Invitational from March 7-9.
