LYNCHBURG, Va. - Ari Tedesco connected on her second home run of the season and paced Charleston Southern with four RBI in the game in support of a Jennifer Giles' complete game inside the circle as the Buccaneers took the series opener from Liberty on Sunday evening at the Liberty Softball Field, 9-3.
Tedesco connected on a solo home run to lead off the top of the fourth inning and the CSU senior left fielder added a bases-clearing double in the top of the fifth to spark as Charleston Southern offensive effort that saw the Bucs connect on 13 hits in the game. CSU also drew seven walks in the contest against the Liberty pitching staff as the Bucs placed runners on base in all seven innings in snapping a four game skid with the win.
Giles (9-6) recorded her fifth complete game of the season on the year going all seven innings as the CSU junior carried a no-hit bit into the fourth inning before allowing home runs to Liberty's Megan Robinson and Sammi Shivock in picking up her team-leading ninth win of the season. Giles scatter four hits and struck out six in the victory.
Annah Jo Brittingham (2-16) suffered the loss for the Flames, allowing four runs in four innings, while Grace Nordan closed out the game on the rubber in the Liberty loss.
Charleston Southern improves to 18-20-1, 4-5 in Big South Conference play with the victory, while Liberty falls to 4-26, 0-7 in conference action with the loss.
Amanda Matsumoto, back in the lineup for the first time in nearly two weeks, led off the game with a bunt single and came around to score on Georgi DeLio's RBI single as the Buccaneer offense got off to the fast start early against Brittingham.
Charleston Southern added three runs in the top of the second as CSU loaded the bases in the frame. CSU loaded the bases on three separate occasions in the game and converted on each opportunity as Brock provided the big hit in the frame with a two-run single to right center scoring Tedesco and Stephanie Bergmann. Matsumoto also came around on the play, scoring on a throwing error by the Flames' pitcher to put the Bucs ahead 4-0 after two innings.
Tedesco's second home run of the season opened up the top of the fourth inning as Buccaneers went up 5-0 with one swing from the Huntington Beach, Calif. native to lead off the frame against Brittingham.
Megan Robinson put the Flames on the board two batters into the bottom of the fourth as she drove in Katie Zavodny with a two-run home run to right centerfield, snapping Giles' no-hit bid in the frame. Three batters later, Sammi Shivock connected on a solo home run to straightaway centerfield pulling the Flames within two at 5-3 after the fourth inning.
The Buccaneers rebounded in the top of the fifth as Tedesco connected on a two-out bases loaded double down the left field line, driving in Lizzy Olmstead, Brooke Holcomb and Natalie Yonan to put CSU back ahead 8-3. Georgi DeLio opened the inning with a single. With Olmstead on to run for her, Holcomb dropped a sacrifice bunt, reaching on the play to put two on with none out. Natale Yonan reached on a two-out walk to load the bases before Tedesco connected on the 3-1 offering from Nordan to put Charleston Southern back ahead by five.
Giles escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth in retiring the final five batters she faced in closing out the game and the Buccaneers win.
Charleston Southern and Liberty close out the weekend series tomorrow afternoon as the Buccaneers take on the Flames in a doubleheader. First pitch between the Bucs and the Flames at the Liberty Softball Field is set for 1 p.m.
