Buccaneers fall twice to Coastal Carolina on Wednesday afternoon

CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in both ends of the doubleheader against host Coastal Carolina on Wednesday afternoon at the CCU Softball Stadium, dropping a 2-1 and 3-0 decision to the Chanticleers.

The Buccaneers fell to 19-26-1 overall on the season, 5-8 on the season in Big South Conference play, while Coastal Carolina improved to 28-11, 10-1 in conference action.

Coastal Carolina 2, Charleston Southern 1

Amanda Matsumoto connected on a double and scored for the Buccaneers in the first inning, but Kiana Quolas out-dueled Jennifer Giles inside the circle in the opening game of the afternoon as Charleston Southern fell in the opener, 2-1.

Giles (9-9) went the distance on the rubber for the Buccaneers on the afternoon, allowing four hits and two runs, while striking out one in the loss. Quolas (18-4) went the distance as well, allowing five hits and one run (none earned) and five strikeouts in picking up the win.

Matsumoto connected on a one-out double in the top of the first inning to put CSU in scoring position. She came around to score two batters later on a fielding error by the Coastal Carolina right fielder to put Charleston Southern ahead 1-0 early in the contest.

Coastal Carolina tied the game up in the bottom of the second as Morgan Noad led off the inning on in reaching on a walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. She came around to score on a Brooke Donovan RBI single to centerfield, tying the contest up at 1-1.

Amanda Daneker got the Coastal Carolina offense going in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single to left center. Courtney Howell came in to run and stole second base to advance into scoring position. Donovan singled her over to third before Sara Rasley sacrificed Howell in on a one-out fly ball to left field to put the Chanticleers ahead 2-1.

The Buccaneers put two runners on base the rest of the way as Stephanie Bergmann reached on a Coastal Carolina fielding error in the fifth and Georgi Delio singled to left in the sixth, but the tying run was unable to cross the plate as the Chants closed out the victory.

Coastal Carolina 3, Charleston Southern 0

Lizzy Olmstead connected on a pinch-hit double in the top of the sixth inning for the Buccaneers offense, but Ashley Bagwell hurled a two-hit shutout in the nightcap for the host Chanticleers in closing out the doubleheader sweep with the 3-0 victory.

Bri Chiusano scored the opening run of the game for Coastal Carolina in the bottom of the first, singling to centerfield to open the inning. After she stole second and advanced to third base on the Quolas sacrifice bunt, Noad doubled to left center to put the Chanticleers ahead 1-0.

CSU's Cheyenne Gandara (7-10) and Bagwell (10-6) traded zeros all the way until the sixth inning when Coastal Carolina pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead as Donovan connected on a two-run home run to straightaway centerfield to put the Chants ahead 3-0.

Olmstead broke the Bagwell no-hit bit in the top of the sixth with a leadoff double, while Stevi Johnson added a single in the top of the seventh for the Buccaneers' two hits in the game.

Gandara went the distance in the contest, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out five in the loss. Bagwell also hurled a complete game in allowing two hits and eight strikeouts in the win.
