Charleston Southern ready for three-game series with Radford

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern returns home this weekend as the Buccaneers host Radford University in a three-game Big South Conference weekend series at the Buccaneer Softball Field. The Bucs have been on an eight-game road trip over the past two weeks, traveling to Liberty, South Carolina, College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina, before returning home for their only home games in the month of April as CSU closes out the month back on the road before exams.

Saturday's doubleheader between the Buccaneers and the Highlanders is set for 1 p.m. and both games will be streamed live on the Big South Network. Sunday's series finale is also set for 1 p.m., with live stats provided on

Charleston Southern is looking from a tough road trip which saw the Buccaneers drop their last six contests after taking the series from Liberty.

The Buccaneers enter the weekend with a 19-26-1 record on the season overall, 5-8 in Big South Conference play on the year. Charleston Southern holds a 13-12-1 mark at home inside the friendly confines of the Buccaneer Softball Field.

Charleston Southern is currently sixth in the Big South rankings entering the weekend, while Radford enters the weekend with a 15-19 overall record, 9-3 in conference play to sit third overall in the standings.

Radford has won their past three Big South series weekends, taking two of three from Winthrop and sweeping both Presbyterian and Liberty.

The Buccaneers will look to stop the Highlanders' recent success behind the bats of seniors of seniors Jessica Brock and Lizzy Olmstead. Brock leads the Buccaneers with a .346 batting average with 45 hits, five home runs and 29 RBI, while Olmstead is hitting .345 with two doubles and eight stolen bases in 37 games' action on the field for CSU.

Stephanie Sbardella leads the Buccaneers with 11 doubles on the season, while Amanda Matsumoto leads the team with 23 runs scored, two triples and 10 stolen bases.

Jennifer Giles leads the CSU efforts inside the circle on the season with a 9-9 overall record, 2.26 ERA and four combined shutouts on the season. Opponents are only hitting .222 against the junior right-hander on the season. She has been even better in Big South play on the year with a 3-2 record, 1.71 ERA on the year with five complete games.

Cheyenne Gandara is also among the team leaders in the circle for the Bucs, posting a 7-10 record and 2.61 ERA on the season. The freshman fireballer leads the Bucs with nine complete games and 111 strikeouts on the season on the year.

Entering the weekend, the Highlanders have two players hitting over .300 on the season with Jessie Hutchens batting .381 from the plate to pace the Radford offense. Hutchens leads the team with five doubles and 12 home runs on the year, including 34 RBI and 26 runs scored on the season. Whitney Davis is hitting .320 on the season with seven home runs, while Becky Mantel has connected on eight home runs on the season.

Abby Morrow and Rachael Walters lead the Highlanders' efforts inside the circle on the season with Morrow leading the way with a 7-4 record and 3.14 ERA. She posts a 91:15 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year to lead the Radford efforts. Walters also posts seven wins on the season with three complete games on the year, including a season-high 16 starts.
