CONWAY, S.C. - Charleston Southern dropped a 7-2 decision on Wednesday afternoon in the series finale against Coastal Carolina as the Buccaneers fell to the host Chanticleers at the CCU Softball Stadium despite Stephanie Bergmann's second home run on the season.
Bergmann connected on her second round-tripper of the season to lead off the top of third inning for Charleston Southern and tie the game up at 2-2, but Coastal Carolina rallied in pushing five runs across over their final two at-bats in completing the regular season series sweep over the Bucs with the victory.
Jennifer Giles (10-12) suffered the loss for the Buccaneers (20-29-1, 6-11) inside the circle as the junior right-hander went 4.2 innings in allowing four hits and five runs in the contest. Morgan Dowdy closed out the fifth inning for CSU on the rubber, while Cheyenne Gandara pitched the final inning for Charleston Southern in the losing effort.
Ashley Bagwell (12-7) picked up the victory inside the circle for the Chants (30-13, 12-3) on the day, going the first six innings in scattering six hits while allowing two runs. Kiana Quolas closed out the victory on the rubber in allowing one hit while striking out three over the final inning.
The Chanticleers jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first as Amanda Daneker and Kory Hayden connected on back-to-back two-out doubles to put Coastal Carolina ahead 2-0 early. Daneker's double brought in Bri Chiusano for the first run of the game, while Hayden's shot in the right centerfield gap scored Daneker to put the score at 2-0 in favor of the home team after the first inning.
Charleston Southern rallied back for one in the top of the second as Natalie Yonan doubled in Ari Tedesco with two outs. However, the CSU rally was cut short as Brandy Galaviz was thrown out attempting to score on the play, leaving the Bucs trailing 2-1.
Bergmann made up the difference in the top of the third, pulling the offering from Bagwell over the right centerfield fence to even the game up at 2-2 for her second home run of the season.
Giles and Bagwell traded zeroes until the bottom of the fifth inning before Morgan Noad put the Chants ahead for good with a one-out single up to right center scoring Chiusano from second to put Coastal ahead 3-2. Hayden added her second RBI double of the game in the frame, while Brooke Donovan drove in Noad to push the Coastal edge to 5-2.
Coastal Carolina added two more insurance runs in the sixth as Maicie Hahn scored on a while pitch and Noad doubled in Chiusano to put the final margin at 7-2.
Amanda Matsumoto led Charleston Southern on the afternoon with a pair of singles from the plate to lead the CSU offense.
