CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) – The Charleston Southern softball team earned the seventh seed in the 2014 Big South Softball Championships by Musco Sports Lighting as the conference tournament field was announced on Sunday evening. The championship will be hosted by Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., beginning on Thursday, May 8.
The No. 7 Buccaneers will take on No. 2 Longwood in first round action on Thursday afternoon with a projected start time set for 5 p.m. between CSU and the Lancers.
Longwood took both games of the series against the Buccaneers earlier this season at the CSU Softball Field, coming from behind to take the series opening 6-5 victory, while defeating the Bucs 7-2 in the nightcap of the opening doubleheader. The third game of the series was not played due to rain.
Coastal Carolina posted the most Conference wins in Big South history and a 20-4 record to win its eighth overall Big South regular-season softball championship and the No. 1 seed at the tournament.
Longwood came in at the No. 2 seed as it finished the season with a 17-6 mark in Conference play. Radford claims the No. 3 seed with a 14-10 Big South record, while Campbell earns the No. 4 spot with a League mark of 13-10. Winthrop finished Big South play at 12-12 and is the No. 5 seed. Presbyterian College finished its Conference campaign with a record of 10-13 to finish sixth and Charleston Southern is the seven seed following 9-13 finish. Gardner-Webb's 6-17 record was good for the No. 8 seed, while Liberty rounds out the field in the No. 9 spot with a 4-20 Conference mark.
