CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern begins their second weekend of the 2015 season as the Buccaneers host their second straight CSU Tournament weekend. This week's tournament field features Delaware, Howard and Toledo with the Bucs hosting Delaware on Friday afternoon in their weekend opener at 1 p.m.
Last weekend CSU went 3-1 with a pair of 8-0 wins over UMBC to open up the 2015 season and an 11-1 win over Southern Illinois. The Bucs fell for the first time in the weekend finale as their seventh inning rally fell short against Ohio State, 10-6. Marci Christian connected on her first two home runs of the season, while Stephanie Baro, Georgi DeLio and Cheyenne Gandara all went deep on the weekend.
CSU continues their tournament run where they will host teams from the Big Ten, the America East, the Missouri Valley, the Mid-American, the Horizon League, the Colonial Athletic Association, the Mid-Eastern Athletic and the Ohio Valley Conference over their four week tournament run starting on February 6 and running through March 7.
Recapping Last Weekend for CSU…
*Charleston Southern went 3-1 overall on the opening weekend, defeating UMBC twice and Southern Illinois by the mercy rule on the weekend.
*Cheyenne Gandara went 2-1 inside the circle on the opening weekend and hit .615 from the plate with a pair of doubles and a solo home run.
*Amanda Matsumoto led the CSU offensive efforts from the plate on the weekend with a .667 batting average. Matsumoto had a team-high 10 hits, scored seven runs and had three doubles.
*Marci Christian hit a pair of home runs in CSU's 11-1 win over Southern Illinois. She moved into 3rd all-time in the CSU career record books with 21 home runs.
*Jennifer Giles hurled a complete game shutout against UMBC on February 7th as the senior right-hander struck out three and scattered four hits in her first win of the season.
*Georgi DeLio and Stephanie Baro connected on their first home runs of the season against Ohio State.
*Brook Richardson currently is tied for the Big South lead in triples after the first weekend of the season. The sophomore left fielder connected on a three-bagger against Southern Illinois
Winkler Against the Tournament Field...
Head Coach Shane Winkler is 4-0 all-time against the CSU Tournament Field this weekend as the Bucs' head coach enters his seventh season in the dugout with CSU. Winkler and the Bucs topped Howard four times at the end of the 2010 season, winning doubleheaders on both May 6 and 7 at the CSU Softball Field.

CSU has not lined up against either Delaware or Toledo in Winkler's tenure with the Bucs.
*Delaware returns 14 letterwinners and nine starters from the 2014 squad which finished 23-25 overall and 5-12 in the CAA. The Blue Hens were picked fifth out of eight teams in the CAA Softball Preseason Coaches Poll.
*Delaware has advanced to the CAA Tournament in three of the first four years under head coach Jaime Wohlbach. In 2013 the Blue Hens won 35 games, one shy of the single season record, and set single season marks in runs scored, hits and doubles.
*Senior rightfielder Jessica Grisler has started all 160 games through her first three seasons. She enters her senior year ranked sixth in UD history with 173 hits, and needs 33 more to set the school record. Her .333 batting average would be the fifth highest in school history, and she also ranks fifth at Delaware with 95 runs scored, tied for sixth with 28 doubles and 233 total bases, and eighth with 23 stolen bases.
*Howard was selected to finish sixth in the Northern Division of the MEAC in the preseason poll. The Bison received one first place vote overall and 61 points in the poll.
*The CSU Tournament is the Bison's first action of the 2015 season. Howard will also play in the Santa Clara Marriott Invitational and the UC Riverside Tournament in California before opening confernece play on March 21 against UMES
*The Bison went 4-36 last season overall, 2-18 away from home and 3-15 in MEAC play
*Jasmine Gammons, Howard's leading hitter returns after batting .289 from the plate with a team-high five home runs.
*Toledo is the lone team other than Charleston Southern who started the 2015 season last weekend with the Rockets going 2-3 at the Cleveland State Dome Tournament. The Rockets topped Niagara and Canisius, while falling to Cleveland State, Robert Morris and Bucknell.
*Former CSU assistant coach Kristen Butler is in her first season as the head coach of the Rockets. Butler was with the Bucs over the past two seasons working with the pitchers and catchers
*Nicole Toven and Jessica Lemieux have two home runs apiece early in the season, whiel Allissa Turkovich is the team leader with a .538 batting average. Chandler Rice (.467, 7 hits, 1 HR) is the player to watch.
Winkler against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference...
The Buccaneers are 21-1 against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference over the past seven years under head coach Shane Winkler. Winkler has faced off against Bethune-Cookman (3-0), Hampton (3-0), Howard (4-0) UMES (2-0), Norfolk State (1-1), North Carolina A&T (2-0), North Carolina Central (3-0) and Savannah State (3-0). Last season CSU topped UMES twice.

Winkler against the Mid-American Conference...
The Buccaneers are 1-5 against the MAC under Winkler in the past seven years, taking on Kent State (0-2) and Ohio (1-3). The Bucs did not play anyone from the MAC last season.
Winkler against the Colonial Athletic Association...
The Buccaneers are 13-11-1 against the Colonial Athletic Association under Winkler as CSU traditionally takes on local rival and CAA member College of Charleston every season. Overall, CSU is 10-10 against CofC, 0-0-1 against Elon and 3-1 against UNC Wilmington. Last season at home, CSU hosted both Elon and College of Charleston.
