Christian earns Big South Player of the Week accolades for the third time

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( – Charleston Southern's Marci Christian has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Softball Player of the Week for games played March 30-April 5 as announced today by the Conference office.

It's the third time Christian has received Big South Player of the Week accolades in the 2015 season, having previously received the awards for her performances on the weeks of February 16-22 and March 3-8.

Christian led the Bucs to a 5-1 week as CSU swept Campbell on the road and took two of three from Winthrop on the weekend. Christian hit a team-best .421 from the plate on the week with five home runs and nine RBI. Nearly all of her home runs on the week came in key situation as the senior slugger stepped up when the Bucs looked to be in trouble.

With the Bucs trailing 2-0 to Campbell in the second game of the series, Christian tied the game up with one swing in the top of the fourth, connecting on a two-run shot to even the game in the Bucs' eventual 4-2 victory. She connected on her first grand slam in the bottom of the sixth against Winthrop in the first game of the series on Friday as the CSU lead jumped from 2-1 to 6-1 with one swing. She added a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth in the second game of the day, sparking a Bucs' rally that fell just short in CSU's only loss of the weekend.

Christian saved her best shot for last though, coming in the series finale against the Eagles on Saturday afternoon. With the Bucs trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the CSU senior launched her league-leading 18th home run to straightaway centerfield to tie the game up. The Bucs would go on to win in extra innings. The home run was the 37th of her career, putting her solely atop the CSU career rankings in the category.

Christian led the Bucs with a team-high eight hits, eight runs scored and two doubles, and in extra innings on Saturday against Winthrop, was intentionally walked twice to limit her impact at the plate.

Charleston Southern continues the 2015 season at home on Wednesday afternoon as the Buccaneers host local rival College of Charleston in a single game at the CSU Softball Field. First pitch between the Buccaneers and the Cougars is set for 4 p.m.
