CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell in a midweek matchup on Wednesday afternoon at the CSU Softball Field to College of Charleston, 9-1.
Brooke Lein brought in the lone CSU run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, drawing a bases-loaded walk as the Bucs fell to Cougars.
CSU remains home this weekend as the Bucs welcome Liberty to the CSU Softball Field for a three-game Big South Conference series on April 11-12. The Bucs will recognize seniors Jennifer Giles and Marci Christian over the weekend in their last home weekend of the season with first pitch on both days is set for 1 p.m.
CSU falls to 26-17 overall with the loss, while CofC improves to 20-19 with the victory.
College of Charleston put scored seven runs over their final three at-bats to pull away from the Bucs in the first matchup between the two local rivals of the season. The Bucs will face-off against the Cougars next Tuesday at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 5 p.m.
Carly Hansis connected on a two-run single in the top of the third inning against CSU starter Jennifer Giles (10-9) to put the Cougars ahead early in the game.
The Bucs took advantage of CofC starter Valerie Cassell's wildness in the bottom of the frame as Georgi DeLio drew a walk to load the bases, before Lein brought in Amanda Matsumoto with a walk to narrow the margin to 2-1.
CofC broke open the game with three runs in the top of the fifth, and plated two each in the sixth and seventh to take the victory.
