CHARLESTON, S.C. - Marci Christian's solo home run in the top of the first was the only offense the Buccaneers were able to muster in their midweek matchup at the College of Charleston as CSU fell to the Cougars at the Patriots Point Athletics Complex, 9-1.
Christian drilled a one-out solo home run over the fence in left field in the top of the first inning to give the Bucs the early lead. The shot, her 19th of the season, was her first in nearly a week since breaking the CSU career record last weekend against Winthrop.
The Bucs fall to 27-20 overall on the season with the loss, while CofC improves to 21-22 with the victory.
Amanda Matsumoto had two of the Bucs three hits on the afternoon, connecting on a two-out triple in the top of the third and a one-out single in the top of the fifth to load the bases as CSU struggled against the Cougars' pitching duo of Samantha Martin (9-8) and Alex Pizzoli.
Hayley Elkins (2-1) suffered her first loss of the season in going one inning inside the circle, allowing five runs (four earned), while striking out one. Jennifer Giles closed out the contest going the final 3.1 innings.
Martin went the first four innings of the game inside the circle for the Cougars, allowing two hits while striking out seven in the win. Pizzoli pitched out of trouble in the fifth, striking out two.
The Cougars plated three runs in both the first and second innings to take the early lead and added two runs in the fourth and the final in the fifth to complete the season sweep over the Bucs.
Charleston Southern remains on the road this weekend as the Bucs return to Big South Conference play, making the trip to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian College for a three-game series. First pitch in Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., while Sunday's series finale is also set for 1 p.m.
