Bucs fall in series opener to the Lancers; Saturday doubleheader to start at 10 a.m.

FARMVILLE, Va. - Charleston Southern fell in the first game of the series to Longwood on Friday night, dropping an 8-0 decision to the Lancers in Big South Conference play.

Brooke Lein and Taylor Powell had back-to-back singles to lead off the top of the third inning for both of CSU's hits on the night as the Bucs' bats struggled throughout the contest against the combined pitching efforts of Libby Morris and Elizabeth McCarthy (19-12).

Jennifer Giles (13-14) took the loss for CSU in the series opener, allowing seven runs and six hit over the first 1.2 innings. Hayley Elkins closed out the game inside the circle for the Bucs with a hitless 2.1 innings pitched, striking out two in the no decision.

The Bucs and Lancers close out the series tomorrow morning with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 10 a.m. The original game time was slated for noon, but due to forecasted afternoon inclement weather, both teams agreed to the morning start.

The Lancers jumped ahead early in the contest with seven runs over the first two innings with Emily Murphy connecting on a three-run shot in the first and a two-run double in the second to pull ahead 7-0.

Casey Lifsey scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, crossing the plate on Jamie Barbour's grounder.

The Bucs threatened in both the third and fourth innings putting runners in scoring position in both frames. However, CSU was unable to plate runs in either frame as Lein and Powell's singles to lead off the third and Natalie Yonan and Georgi DeLio's back-to-back one-out walks in the fourth came up short as McCarthy entered the contest to shut the Bucs down.
