Christian, Gandara and Matsumoto headline CSU's All-Conference selections

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Stephanie Baro was named to the All-Freshman team, while senior pitcher Jennifer Giles was named to the Big South All-Academic Team as announced today by the Conference office.

Christian, a three-time Big South Player of the Week, was named the Big South First Team first baseman. She led the NCAA in home runs when the initial standings were released in March on her way to finishing second overall in the Big South in home runs, RBI and slugging percentage, as well as third in total bases, runs scored and on-base percentage. She also homered twice in five different games in setting the CSU career home runs mark and the CSU single season mark in home runs, total bases and slugging percentage.

Gandara was selected to the Big South First Team as the utility player after a standout campaign that saw the CSU sophomore lead the Big South in home runs, RBI, wins, appearances, strikeouts and starts at the time of her injury. She hit .381 from the plate with 16 home runs and 49 RBI, while posting a 14-8 overall record inside the circle with a 2.65 ERA and 156 strikeouts.

Matsumoto garnered All-Conference honors for the first time in her career, earning a First Team selection in the outfield. The fleet-footed sophomore finished second in the Big South in hits and runs scored, while finishing fourth overall in batting average (.401) and stolen bases (21). She is currently tied for the CSU single season runs record with 49 heading into conference play.

Baro earned All-Freshman honors despite missing the last half of the season due to injury. Prior to her injury, she was among the Big South leaders in batting average and RBI, hitting .444 in conference play in her first collegiate season.

Giles earned All-Academic honors for the third straight season and wrapped up her regular season career with the Bucs as CSU's all-time leader in strikeouts and appearances. She has a 3.95 GPA majoring in Kinesiology and minoring in Biology, and received CSU's R.L. Wynn Christian Leadership Award this season at the 49th Annual CSU Athletic Awards Banquet.
