CHARLESTON, S.C. - Head Coach Shane Winkler and the Charleston Southern softball team have announced an addition to the 2016 schedule as the Buccaneers will add a game against Georgia on March 10. First pitch between the Bucs and the Bulldogs is set for 2:30 p.m. at the CSU Softball Field.
Georgia becomes the third Southeastern Conference school the Bucs have hosted over the past four seasons. Previously, CSU hosted Tennessee twice at the Buccaneer Invitational during the 2013 season, as well as hosting Mississippi State.
"I couldn't be more excited to have Georgia coming to play here at Buccaneer Field," said Winkler. "They are a perennial Top 10 program and will be a favorite to reach the World Series this year. We have had a Top 15 win on our home field in the past and we welcome the opportunity to try to pull off a major upset in front of our fans. Playing a team as talented as Georgia multiple times in addition to the rest of our challenging schedule is only going to better prepare us for Big South play."
Charleston Southern will also face Georgia on the second day of the Holy City Showdown hosted by College of Charleston on March 12.
The Bulldogs finished the 2015 season ranked No. 12 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and No. 13 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Poll. Georgia advanced through the Athens Regional in the NCAA Tournament before falling to national runner-up in the NCAA Super Regional.
The Bucs roster features a young, but experienced roster led by senior Natalie Yonan, as well as All-Conference selections Amanda Matsumoto and Cheyenne Gandara, as well as All-Tournament selection Stephanie Bergmann.
Charleston Southern opens the 2016 season at home with the first of three CSU Tournaments, hosting Towson, IPFW and Georgetown on February 12-13.
