CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Charleston Southern junior outfielder Stevi Johnson was named the Big South Softball Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
The Visalia, Calif. native guided the Bucs to a 4-1 weekend with wins over Western Carolina, Boston and North Carolina A&T (twice) as CSU improved to 7-1 overall early in the 2016 season.
Johnson led the Bucs with a .538 batting average with a team-high seven hits and three doubles on the weekend with multiple hits in three of the five games.
In CSU's 5-4 win over Western Carolina on Friday afternoon, Johnson connected on the game-tying RBI with a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning driving in Stephanie Baro. She scored the game-winning run on Stephanie Bergmann's walk-off single in the win.
Johnson put the Bucs on the board in CSU's lone loss on the weekend against Western Carolina with an RBI sacrifice fly ball scoring Jade Gandara. She added a single in the bottom of the fifth and drew a walk in the contest.
The junior outfielder continued to have the hot bat at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double in CSU's 3-1 win over N.C. A&T on Saturday afternoon. She drove in Stephanie Baro in the bottom of the third inning for an insurance run in the CSU win
In CSU's final win of the weekend against N.C. A&T, Johnson connected on a pair of doubles in her only two at-bats, scoring twice while driving in an RBI in the Bucs' 10-2 win over the Aggies. Johnson scored CSU's first run of the ball game on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning. She added an RBI double scoring Jade Gandara in the Bucs' five-run third inning as CSU pulled away in the win.
CSU returns to action this week with a midweek matchup against College of Charleston on Wednesday afternoon, before hosting Delaware State, Savannah State and UT Arlington in their final home tournament on February 26-28.
