SB Preview: Buccaneers host Savannah State, Delaware State and UT Arlington at the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern welcomes Savannah State, Delaware State and UT Arlington to the CSU Softball Field this weekend for the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational on February 27-29 as the Bucs close out their 15 game home stand to open the 2016 season.

The Buccaneers went 4-1 this past weekend at the CSU Invitational, topping N.C. A&T twice, while picking up wins over Western Carolina and Boston over the three day weekend. The Bucs improved their overall season record to 7-1 on the season following the weekend.

Junior outfielder Stevi Johnson continued the CSU softball early season award winners, earning Big South Player of the Week accolades following her performance at the tournament. She led the Bucs with a .538 batting average with a team-high seven hits and three doubles on the weekend with multiple hits in three of the five games on the weekend.

Scouting Charleston Southern…
*Charleston Southern went 4-1 over the CSU Invitational weekend topping N.C. A&T twice, while posting wins over Western Carolina and Boston

*Stevi Johnson led the Bucs' offense, hitting .538 from the plate with a team-high three doubles among her seven hits in earning Big South Player of the Week honors

*Georgi DeLio batted .500 from the plate on the weekend and ended the weekend having reached base in her final seven at-bats from the plate, including a two-run home run on Sunday afternoon in CSU's 10-2 win over N.C. A&T

*Lexie Vanada hit .500 from the plate with a pair of doubles and an RBI lining up in the DP spot for the Bucs over the weekend

*Arizona Pilgrim continued her hot start inside the circle over the second weekend of the season, going 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA in two appearances

*Nicole Ayala picked up her first win of the season on Sunday afternoon against N.C. A&T with the sophomore right-hander pitching four innings of four-hit ball in the win

*Stephanie Bergmann paces the CSU offense overall on the season with a .458 batting average. The junior shortstop has hit safely in all eight games on the season and leads the team with eight RBI

*Johnson is connecting at a .455 clip from the plate with a team-high four doubles on the season

*Amanda Matsumoto has paced the CSU offense on the base paths. The junior centerfielder is 8-for-9 in stolen base attempts on the year and is hitting .381 from the plate at the top of the Bucs' lineup

*Freshman Lexi Thompson delivered an RBI double in her first collegiate at-bat on Sunday afternoon, driving the ball to the fence in the right-centerfield gap

*Hayley Elkins has been the CSU workhorse inside the circle in 2016, posting team-highs in appearances (6), complete games (3), starts (4) and strikeouts.

Scouting Delaware State…
*Delaware State enters the weekend with a 2-3 overall record at opening the season at the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Showcase hosted by UNC Wilmington. The Hornets topped Rhode Island twice for both of their wins to open the year

*Sandy Hawthorne leads the Hornets' batting efforts early in the season with a .313 batting average with five hits and a run scored over the weekend. She also has a team-high four RBI on the year.

*Nicole Gazzola has been the team's base-stealing threat on the year, going a perfect 7-for-7 on the base paths to go with six runs scored

*Three Delaware State pitchers have seen multiple appearances in the circle in the 2016 season with Jessica Shalongo, Tara Tursellino and Nicole Brock all making three appearances on the rubber

*Delaware State was picked to win the Northern Division of the MEAC in the preseason poll, receiving 170 points and 18 first place votes.

Scouting Savannah State…
*Savannah State enters the weekend with a 2-7 overall record after opening the season with the Lady Tiger Classic and the USC Upstate Tournament. SSU topped Drexel in the opening tournament and defeated Akron last weekend to post both of their wins on the year

*Torrian Wright, the 2015 NCAA Softball Batting Average leader, has started off the season slow by her standards, but is hitting .308 with two doubles and a home run over the first two weekends. She has also drawn 13 walks in her 27 plate appearances

*Cortni Jones and Shelby Eccles are both hitting .391 from the plate on the season with Jones providing power with pair of home runs, while Eccles leads the team with two doubles

*All four SSU pitchers on the roster have seen time in the circle with Ashley Eichenlaub leading the way with four starts and a complete game

*Savannah State was picked second in the Southern Division of the MEAC preseason poll, receiving 128 points and 10 first place votes

Scouting UT Arlington…
*UT Arlington hits the road riding a 10-0 start to the season, the best start in program history and are 1 of only 9 teams still undefeated on the season.

*The Mavericks have 2 hitters ranked amongst the top-50 in the nation in batting average with Krista Rude 24 (.556) and Sandra Mendoza 49th (.515). Mendoza's 17 and Rude's 15 hits this season are the 3rd and 5th most in conference respectively.

*Samantha Clakley sits 22nd in the country and leads the Sun Belt in ERA with a 0.49 ERA. Her 2 complete-game shutouts top the conference and puts her 4th in the nation.

*UT Arlington is making their first trip to Charleston Southern in program history

*UT Arlington was picked seventh overall in the Sun Belt Preseason Poll, earning 46 votes overall. Senior designated player Mya Anderson was named to the Preseason All-Conference team.
