CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charleston Southern freshman catcher Caitlyn Emberson was named this week's Big South Conference Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Emberson, a freshman from Taft, Calif., becomes the fourth Buccaneer recognized by the conference office on the season. Freshman pitcher Arizona Pilgrim was named the Big South Pitcher of the Week on February 15, while junior outfielder Stevi Johnson (Feb. 22) and freshman outfielder Jade Gandara (Feb. 29) earned Big South Player of the Week honors.
Emberson and Coastal Carolina's Taty Forbes were selected as co-Big South Player of the Week honors, while Longwood's Elizabeth McCarthy and Radford's Abby Morrow were named co-Big South Pitcher of the Week honors.
Emberson hit a scorching .643 from the plate with nine hits in 14 at-bats with five going for extra bases in pacing the CSU offense on the week. The freshman catcher had a 1.571 slugging percentage and a .688 on-base percentage, leading the Bucs with a double, four home runs, six RBI and seven runs scored.
Emberson hit safely in all five games on the week against Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. The freshman catcher opened the week on Wednesday with an RBI single in CSU's five-run fourth inning tying the game up in the first game against the Chanticleers.
In the nightcap, Emberson connected on a leadoff solo home run in the second inning, then added a solo shot to tie the game up in the sixth inning in the Bucs' eventual loss to the Chants. She went 3-for-3 from the plate in the game with three RBI and two runs scored.
Against the Eagles on the weekend, Emberson kept connecting as the freshman catcher opened the series with a pair of singles and three runs scored in CSU's 8-0 series opening win. In the second game, she connected on the game-winning solo home run in the Bucs' 2-1 victory over Winthrop. In the nightcap, Emberson provided nearly all the offense for the Bucs with a home run and a double.
The Buccaneers continue the 2016 season on the road this week as CSU travels to Patriots Point and College of Charleston for a Wednesday doubleheader. First pitch between the Bucs and the Cougars is set for 4 p.m.
