SB Preview: CSU wraps up home stand with Willie Jewell's Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern welcomes Boise State, Maryland Eastern Shore, Presbyterian and S.C. State to the CSU Softball Field this weekend as the Buccaneers wrap up their 16 game home stand February 23-26 with the 2017 Willie Jewell's Invitational. The Bucs take on Boise State in a doubleheader on Thursday, Boise State and Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday, Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday and wrap up the tournament with a matchup against S.C. State on Sunday afternoon.  First pitch between CSU and Boise State is set for 1:00 p.m. tomorrow on the Big South Network.

CSU Game Notes - 2017 Willie Jewell's Invitational

Scouting Charleston Southern...

*Last weekend, Charleston Southern hosted its second of three home tournaments this month and finished the 2017 Buccaneer Invitational 4-1. CSU recorded wins against Virginia and ETSU, while splitting its series with UNC Wilmington.
*The Buccaneers have hit 17 home runs in their two weeks of play and are tied for third-most total home runs in the country. CSU leads the Big South Conference with an average of 1.71 home runs per game and is ranked 13th in the NCAA.
*With 69 stolen bases in her career, senior Amanda Matsumoto is just six away from tying the program record and needs just seven to surpass it.
*Freshman pitcher Holly Clark leads CSU and the Big South with two saves and has already made a team-high nine appearances in the circle for the Bucs this season.

Scouting Boise State...

*Boise State enters this weekend with a record of 5-2, with wins against UAB, Weber State, Memphis and Southern Utah. The Broncos recorded their two losses at the Paradise Classic where they fell at Hawaii, 5-3, in their season-opener on 2/9 and Sacramento State, 8-3, on 2/10.
*Last weekend, Boise State went 4-0 at the DeMarini Classic in Las Vegas.
*The Broncos are led by sophomore Rebekah Carvantes. The 2016 Mountain West Freshman of the Year is batting .500 this season with 12 hits, 10 runs scored and four doubles. Carvantes has also hit a pair of home runs and has driven in eight this season.
*Senior Christina Washington leads Boise State from the circle with three starts in her four appearances. Washington has a 2-1 record and 2.84 ERA this season, with 12 strikeouts and four walks in her 19 innings pitched.

Scouting Maryland Eastern Shore...

*Maryland Eastern Shore enters this weekend with a record of 1-3, with a lone win from a 3-0 shutout in MDES' rematch with North Carolina Central.
*The Hawks opened their season on 2/10 at the Campbell Invitational, falling to North Carolina Central, 6-4, in their season-opener. MDES was also topped by Campbell, 12-4, on 2/10 and Saint Francis, 12-4, on 2/11.
*Junior Samantha Casarez leads the Hawks at the plate with a batting average of .545 on the season. Casarez has recorded six hits in her 11 at bats, including one double and one home run.
*Junior Adrienne Guerra leads MDES in the circle with 14 strikeouts in her two starts this season. Guerra finished last season with a league-leading 131 strikeouts.

Scouting Presbyterian...

*Presbyterian enters this weekend with a record of 2-8. The Blue Hose opened the season against UNC Charlotte at the Carolina Classic on 2/10 and topped the 49ers, 3-2. Presbyterian was shutout in its next three games of the tournament, falling to both Ohio and South Carolina.
*The Blue Hose recorded their second win of the season in a 5-4 victory over Furman at last weekend's USC Upstate/Furman Classic.
*Senior Hope Rogers leads Presbyterian at the plate with hits in three of her last four games, including back-to-back doubles against Furman and Iona. After never recording a triple in her first three years with the Blue Hose, Rogers has already collected three this season.

Scouting S.C. State...

*S.C. State enters this weekend on the hunt for its first win, with a 0-9 record on the season.
*The Bulldogs opened the season on 2/10 at the Kennesaw State Tournament and are coming off last weekend's UNF Osprey Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida.
*Freshman Day-sha Stewart leads S.C. State at the plate with seven hits in her nine starts, for a .269 batting average.
*Junior Deanna Sullivan leads the Bulldogs with a slugging percentage of .421 and team-high six RBIs. Sullivan is also one of two Bulldogs with a home run this season.

Home Run Hitters
After opening the season with the second-most home runs (13) of any team in the country, the Buccaneers bats are still going strong heading into the 2017 Willie Jewell's Invitational. Charleston Southern is now tied for third in the nation with a combined 17 home runs over two weeks of play. CSU shares the No. 3 spot with Arizona (Pac-12) and Virginia (Atlantic Coast) and is right behind UCLA's (Pac-12) 18. Arkansas (SEC) currently leads the NCAA with a total of 21 home runs this season.

The Buccaneers lead the Big South Conference with an average of 1.42 home runs per game and are ranked 13th in the NCAA. CSU is also leading the conference with a .503 slugging percentage and is second in the league with 1.42 doubles per game. 

Mallory Kasinger, Jade Gandara, Brittany McPherson and Caitlyn Emberson lead CSU with three home runs apiece and are tied for second in the Big South. Last weekend, McPherson recorded a two-run home run in back-to-back games to open the Buccaneer Invitational on Friday and help CSU top Virginia and East Tennessee State.
