CHARLESTON, S.C. – Brittany McPherson went 2-for-2 with a home run and Arizona Pilgrim and Nicole Ayala combined on a four-hitter as Charleston Southern topped Maryland Eastern Shore 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Pilgrim (3-4) held the Hawks to just two hits through five innings and recorded three strikeouts in the CSU win. Ayala went to the circle in the final two frames and worked two shutout innings and set the side down in order in the sixth.
The Bucs recorded their four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a solo home run from McPherson. Amanda Matsumoto sparked the rally with a single to shortstop to open the bottom of the frame. Cheyenne Gandara reached on a fielding error, and both players recorded a stolen base with Caitlyn Emberson at the plate.
Emberson got both runs across with a double to deep center field and advanced to third on a passed ball. A sacrifice bunt for the RBI from Stevi Johnson gave the Bucs their third run, and McPherson added one more with her fourth homer of the season for the 4-0 CSU lead.
Matsumoto finished the day with three stolen bases giving the fleet-footed senior 73 in her career with the Bucs. She is just two shy of tying the program record.
The Hawks recorded three hits over the next four innings, but were unable to execute a run in their second shutout with the Buccaneers and their last day of play at the Willie Jewell's Invitational.
