CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern shut out South Carolina State, 12-0, in Sunday's Willie Jewell Invitational finale.
Destini Ewing led the Buccaneers (9-9) at the plate with back-to-back home runs and added four RBI. Freshman Holly Clark recorded her second shutout of the season, striking out seven in the complete game effort.
CSU got on the board early with four runs in the first inning. Amanda Matsumoto led the Bucs off with a bunt for a base hit. The speedy senior advanced to second on a steal and made it to third on an illegal pitch. Jade Gandara knocked in CSU's first run with a single to right field, and run-scoring hits from Stevi Johnson and Georgi DeLio gave the Bucs the 4-0 lead after one inning.
Clark (3-2) held the Bulldogs (0-12) hitless over the next three innings and Ewing recorded her first collegiate home run for a 5-0 Buccaneer lead to open the bottom of the fourth. The sophomore slugger added another homer in her second at-bat of the inning and Caitlyn Emberson connected on a double that was just short of clearing the fence. CSU finished the inning with seven hits for eight runs and the 12-0 lead.
Clark opened the fifth frame with her seventh strikeout. She'Nautica Bates gave the Bulldogs their second hit of the game, reaching first on a slow-rolling bunt, and Deanna Sullivan recorded S.C. State's third and final hit with a single through the left side in the 12-0 shutout.
The Buccaneers now turn their attention to next week as they head to Hawaii for the 2017 Coca-Cola Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. First pitch between CSU and Toledo is set for Friday at 8:30 p.m. (EST).
