CHARLESTON, S.C. - Sunday's weekend finale of the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational between host Charleston Southern and North Carolina A&T has been canceled due to team illness. The game between the two teams has not been rescheduled as of this time.
Charleston Southern finishes the opening weekend tournament with a 3-1 record with wins over North Dakota, N.C. A&T, and Towson. Several players stood out in particular over the first four games.
Junior outfielder Jade Gandara has picked up where she left of last season with the Hemet, Calif. native boasting a .769 (10-for-13) batting average with a home run, six RBI, and five runs scored. Fellow junior Caitlyn Emberson boasts a .714 on-base percentage after receiving four walks, getting hit by four pitches, and connectingon a pair of hits in her 14 at-bats. Sophomore catcher Mallory Kasinger connected on a three-run home run in Saturday's 15-4 win over Towson and added a pair of doubles over the weekend to lead the Bucs both extra base hits (3) and RBI (6). Freshman shortstop Madison Koger also posted a strong opening weekend with five hits in her 11 at-bats for a .455 average.
Freshman Alyssa Heinrich recorded her first three appearances in the circle this weekend to lead CSU's pitching efforts. She recorded a 0.70 ERA over 10.0 innings and recorded the wins over N.C. A&T and Towson. She also posted a 9:0 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the weekend. Sophomore Holly Clark went the distance in the season opener to record CSU's first opening day shutout since the 2015 season.
CSU continues the 2018 season next weekend as the Bucs host the Buccaneer Invitational at the CSU Softball Field on February 16-18. The tournament field comprises of CSU, Eastern Kentucky, N.C. Central, and Valparaiso. First game of the tournament is set for 11 a.m. on Friday morning between EKU and Valparaiso.
