Gandara and Heinrich receive conference weekly honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charleston Southern's Jade Gandara and Alyssa Heinrich received Big South Softball Player and Freshman of the Week honors as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

The CSU duo helped lead the Bucs' program to a 3-1 opening record with wins over North Dakota, North Carolina A&T, and Towson at the Wingate by Wyndham Invitational.

Gandara posted the highest batting average (.769), slugging percentage (1.000), on-base percentage (.786), and tied for the most hits (10) over the opening weekend of the 2018 season as she helped lead the Bucs to a 3-1 record over the opening weekend. She recorded multiple hits in all four contests, to extend her on-base streak to 10 games dating back to the end of the 2017 season.

Gandara opened the year with two of CSU's four hits in the Bucs' 1-0 win over North Dakota. In the second game of the doubleheader, she drove in both of CSU's runs along with her first home run of the season. Against North Carolina A&T, she led the team with three of the team's seven hits, adding two runs and an RBI in the Bucs' 6-0 win over the Aggies. She finished with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored in CSU's 15-4 win over Towson.

Heinrich paced CSU's pitching efforts over the opening weekend of the season as the freshman posted a team-high 10.0 innings pitched to go with a pair of wins, 10 strikeouts, and a 0.70 ERA.

Heinrich opened the year with a pair of two-hit innings against North Dakota on opening day. She followed up with five shutout innings to go with six strikeouts against North Carolina A&T in picking up her first win of the season. She then shut down Towson in the weekend finale, allowing three hits and one run while striking out three over three innings in the win.

Liberty's Julia DiMartino was selected as the conference's Pitcher of the Week.
