Late comeback pushes Presbyterian past Charleston Southern, 50-48

CLINTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern was unable to put a stop to a last minute comeback effort by Presbyterian as the Buccaneers fell to the Blue Hose, 50-48, on Tuesday night.

The PC victory came down the free-throw line in the final seconds of the game and the Blue Hose were nearly perfect from the stripe making 15-of-16 (94 percent) in recording the conference win.

Charleston Southern was led by Jasmine Blackmon, recording a game-high seven rebounds and nine points in the Buccaneer loss.  Ke'Asia Jackson and Breannah Bretches also contributed nine points, while Alyssa Mann scored eight, adding four assists and four steals.

Presbyterian was paced by the double-digit performances of Cortney Storey, Kacie Hall and Aianna Kelly with each player recording 10 points in the Blue Hose win.

Charleston Southern (8-8, 2-3) shot 35 percent from the floor against Presbyterian's (5-11, 3-2) 21 percent, but the Blue Hose topped the Buccaneers from beyond the arc, making 7-of-33 (21 percent) attempts against CSU's 1-of-11 (9 percent).

The Buccaneers got off to a cold start, unable to find their first basket until nearly four minutes into the game.  Rachel Burns helped CSU get on the board with a steal that Mann would finish for a layup.  Brianna Lakes contributed a point at the free throw line and Jackson connected on a pair of shots in the final four minutes of a low-scoring first quarter as CSU trailed PC 8-7 with each team only shooting 27.3 percent from the floor.

Presbyterian's Riley Hemm opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to put the Blue Hose up 11-7, but CSU answered back with a 6-0 scoring run sparked by a Burns' layup and back-to-back Bretches' layups for the 13-11 lead.  Storey put the game at 13-all with a layup at the 3:44 mark, but Shauntavia Dobson sparked another 6-0 scoring run for the Bucs after sinking CSU's only three-pointer of the game.  Hall closed out the second quarter with a bucket from beyond the arc to send the teams into the half with a one-possession game with CSU leading 19-16.

The Buccaneers held the lead for majority of the third quarter, but PC continued to battle back, going ahead on three separate occasions and tying up the game five times, putting the score at 33-all with ten minutes to play.

Charleston Southern gained a small lead in the fourth quarter with two jumpers from Nayla Long and a Blackmon layup.  The Buccaneers held their largest lead of the night following a 14-6 scoring run with baskets from Blackmon, Bretches and Jackson to give CSU the 47-39 lead with four minutes remaining.

Turnovers hurt the Bucs and swung the momentum to Presbyterian as the Blue Hose held CSU scoreless from the floor over the final four minutes of the game.  Mann went to the line for CSU's final point and gave the Bucs a 48-43 lead with 1:49 left on the clock.

Following a Storey layup, a tired defense put the Bucs in foul trouble and sent Storey and Kelly to the free throw line.  Presbyterian closed out the game with a pair of Storey free throws in the final second for the 50-48 win.

The Buccaneers turn their attention back home as they host Radford on Saturday afternoon.  Tipoff at the Buc Dome is set for 3:00 p.m. on the Big South Network.
