Bucs open 2017-18 preseason practice

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern held its first official preseason practice on Sunday evening at the Buc Dome. Led by head coach Fred Applin, CSU returns three starters from last year's team that advanced to the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).

Applin expects big years from junior guards Ke'Asia Jackson and Rachel Burns. Sophomore center Jasmine Blackmon is the other returning starter for the Bucs.

2017-18 CSU Quick Facts

"Rachel Burns and Ke'Asia Jackson should have a good year," Applin said. "They know the conference and know how tough it is. I think we are looking for leadership from both of those players. Rachel Burns has stepped up into a leadership role and has contributed to the new players coming in."

CSU tips off the season by hosting Columbia International on Nov. 10. Applin hopes that a difficult non-conference slate will prepare the team for an always challenging Big South conference schedule.

"Our non-conference schedule is going to prepare us for the conference," Applin said. "We are playing some teams that will challenge us and it gives us the opportunity to see where we are and where we need to get better."

For now, the Bucs are focused on the first practice and preparing for the season. Applin thinks the team has done its fair share of offseason work and is ready to get better every single day.

"I just want them to get to know each other and get to know our system and start preparing us for the first game," Applin said. "I think this is a team that has done a lot on and off the court. I think they are ready for the first practice, and just like any other team right now, this team is hungry."
