McNeill and Thompson named All-Big South; McNeill earns spot on All-Academic Team

NINETY-SIX, S.C. – Charleston Southern junior Hayley McNeill and senior Shelby Thompson were named to the 2017 Big South All-Conference Team on Wednesday. McNeill also earned a spot on the Big South All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.

McNeill and Thompson anchored the top of CSU's lineup all season, leading the Bucs to the number two seed in the Big South Championship. Their play was instrumental in the program setting a single-season scoring average record for the third straight year. The duo entered this week ranked third and fifth in the conference, respectively, in scoring average.

McNeill highlighted her campaign by setting the school 54-hole scoring record at February's Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic. The Australian finished at four-under 212 to take fifth place in a strong field featuring 232 players. The effort was one of three top-ten showings in six events this spring. Along the way, McNeill broke her own school mark for par-three scoring and compiled the second best par-five scoring average in CSU annals. McNeill was selected to the All-Academic Team thanks to her Dean's List status at CSU. The psychology major holds a 3.6 GPA.

Thompson carried the Bucs in the fall and finished the year on a high note with a ninth-place finish at the Big South Championship. The Ohioan recorded the two lowest to-par rounds in CSU history – a six-under 66 at the Pinehurst Challenge and a four-under 68 at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate. She claimed runner-up honors at the season-opening CSU Fall Invitational and also logged top-ten finishes at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate (4th) and Pinehurst Challenge (9th). Her scoring average is fourth-best in CSU history and nearly four shots better than her mark as a junior. Thompson also set the single-season school mark in par-five scoring average.
