CHARLESTON, S.C. – Charleston Southern was unable to put a stop to a hot start by High Point University on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers fell to the Panthers, 3-1 on CSU's Senior Day.
The Buccaneers (6-7, 2-3) were out-shot 23-9 in the contest and the Panthers (8-5-2, 4-1-1) held the 10-0 advantage on corner kicks.
CSU's Anna Sells scored the Buccaneers only goal of the match in the 84th minute. Following a scramble in the box, Sells won the ball and sent it rolling to the back of the net with a slide towards the goal. The goal marked Sells' eighth of the season, further solidifying her spot as the top scorer in the Big South. Liz Amanda Brown faced an aggressive High Point offense and recorded 12 saves in the net for the Buccaneers.
High Point got on the board first with a header goal from junior forward Bri Jean-Charles in the 25th minute. Midfielder Becca Rolfe found the head of Jean-Charles with a high pass in the box. The header sailed into the back of the net to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
Rolfe went on to contribute to High Point's second goal in the first half after her flip throw from the sideline made a beeline towards the foot of Michele Micciche. The junior forward connected on the throw with a shot into the right side of the net to give the Panthers the 2-0 lead going into the half.
High Point's third goal came from a penalty kick in the 57th minute by redshirt-junior forward Bailey Beattie in the physical match made up of 20 fouls total.
CSU now turns its attention to Gardner-Webb as they head back on the road to face the Bulldogs on Wednesday. Kickoff at Greene-Harbison Field is set for 7 p.m. on the Big South Network.
