Last Time Between CSU and Winthrop * October 14, 2015
Lydia Frierson scored on a first half penalty kick and Anna Sells connected on her seventh goal of the season late in the contest as Charleston Southern shutout visiting Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon at the CSU Soccer Field, 2-0. Sidney Doherty nearly added a goal in the 18th minute as the freshman forward hustled and deflected Duncan's clearance attempt. However, the deflected trailed wide left of the net and rolled out of play before CSU could chase it down. Sells added a shot in the 21st minute that trailed wide right after stealing the ball from the Eagles defense.
Alyssa Dellacqua recorded her second shutout of the season in the net as the freshman goalkeeper stopped all eight Eagles shots on goal in the contest.
Recapping CSU's Last Game
Charleston Southern was held scoreless on Wednesday night as the Buccaneers fell on the road to Gardner-Webb, 2-0. CSU (6-8, 2-4) lost momentum early in the match when the Runnin' Bulldogs (9-7-2, 6-2) scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the game. While CSU created a greater number of opportunities for themselves to get on the board in the second half, they were unable to capitalize on those efforts with GWU outshooting the Bucs 28-10 and holding the 9-4 advantage on corner kicks.
Defensively in the net, Liz Amanda Brown (4-3-0) held GWU scoreless in the second half. The junior goalkeeper faced 12 shots on goal from an aggressive Runnin' Bulldogs offense and recorded 10 saves for the match.
Big South Standout
After contributing goals in both of last week's matches, senior forward Anna Sells now leads the Big South with eight goals for the season. Sells also leads the conference in game-winning goals with four and ranks second for most points in the Big South with 17 points so far this year.
