CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern will host 10 matches on the friendly pitch of the CSU Soccer Field this fall as Head Coach Eric Terrill announced the release of the 2017 women's soccer schedule on Tuesday afternoon.
Highlighting the schedule is a home match against College of Charleston for the annual battle for the Silver Cup. This year's Nike Challenge features games against Alabama State and Delaware State. The Bucs' conference home slate includes matches against Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, Longwood, Winthrop, and Radford.
"It's a good schedule for a young team," Terrill said. "We're happy about how it played out and look forward to the upcoming season."
The Bucs add another first-time opponent to the schedule in 2017 as CSU welcomes Delaware State to the CSU Soccer Field on September 10 for the finale of the Nike Challenge. CSU will also continue rivalries with Jacksonville, North Florida, Coastal Carolina, The Citadel, and Wofford this season.
The Buccaneers return 16 players from last season's roster including seniors Lydia Frierson, Kelly Hinkle, and Ally Gerthoffer. CSU also returns a deep junior class with 11 on the roster for 2017 and two sophomores to go with 10 newcomers that will help provide the Bucs with depth and experience on the field.
CSU opens the regular season in the Sunshine State as the Buccaneers travel to Jacksonville (Aug. 18) and North Florida (Aug. 20). The Bucs' home opener is set for a Thursday afternoon matchup against South Carolina State on August 24, before CSU travels to Coastal Carolina (Aug. 27) and The Citadel (Aug. 30) to close out the opening month of the season.
The annual battle for the Silver Cup takes place on September 3 as the Bucs host College of Charleston on the CSU Soccer Field. The contest between the Bucs and Cougars starts a four-match home stand for CSU that includes the Nike Challenge and a home match against Wofford (Sept. 15). The Bucs host Alabama State (Sept. 8) and Delaware State (Sept. 10) in the Nike Challenge this season.
Big South Conference play for CSU begins on September 23 at UNC Asheville. The Bucs close out September with home contests against Presbyterian (Sept. 27) and Gardner-Webb (Sept. 30).
CSU opens October with three of its first four matches on the road as the Bucs travel to High Point (Oct. 4), Campbell (Oct. 11) and Liberty (Oct. 14). CSU's lone home match during the stretch comes on October 7 against Longwood.
The Bucs close out the regular season with back-to-back home matches against Winthrop and Radford. CSU hosts the Eagles on October 18, before taking on the Highlanders on Senior Day on October 21.
The Big South Conference Women's Soccer Championship First Round start on October 28 on the site of the higher seed institutions. The semifinals and finals will be held on November and 5 in Greensboro, N.C.
