Friday Feature: Getting to Know Kelly Hinkle

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Already halfway through the season, the Charleston Southern Buccaneer Soccer team is ready to enter conference play. As the team prepares for UNC Asheville, senior Kelly Hinkle said, "Our biggest struggle right now is scoring, so we're focusing on scoring this week."

Hinkle, the Cincinnati, Ohio native finished third on the team last season with three goals scored and 25 shots. She placed tenth in the Big South in game-winning goals with two.

Hinkle is seen as a leader on the team and was named captain for the 2017 season. The skill goes beyond the field and into the kitchen for this midfielder as her secret talent is cooking.

Favorite Candy: Reese's Cup, specifically the Easter or Christmas ones

What would your spirit animal be? A bird

What got you into soccer? My parents started me when I was four.

If you could time travel to the future or past, what year or era would you choose? I would go back to freshman year of high school to relive the past.

Hobbies outside of soccer: I like to try different foods, so I go to a million different restaurants.

Best pre-game meal: Pasta

If you were stranded on an island, what three objects would you bring? My dog, a knife to eat with and a blanket.

Favorite TV Show: The Bachelor

If you could visit any place in the world, where would you go? Ireland. My grandmother is from there and we still have family there, so I would love to meet them.

Best advice ever received: Probably from my dad to stay true to myself. He would always tell me I could do anything I wanted.

What do you miss most about Ohio? The driving. People in the south don't know how to drive.

What will you miss most about soccer?  I'll miss the team the most and just having a team in general. It's going to be weird not having all the girls.

Secret talent: Cooking

Best dish to cook: Seafood

Morning or night person: Morning. I go to bed around 10 p.m. and wake up at 7 a.m.

If you could change your name, what would you change it to? Ellie. It's my dog's name. I named her and I love it.

Biggest inspiration: God. I know that He is always going to be there for me and He's never going to let me down no matter if I fail or succeed.

Any siblings? Two older brothers

Favorite memory from playing soccer at CSU: This year my favorite memory would be our evacuation to Beech Mountain. There were 27 girls in one house, so there was a lot going on. It was definitely something that will never be forgotten.

After playing soccer for 17 years, Kelly Hinkle is in her last season. "I'm looking to grow as much as I can as a person in these last couple of months and hopefully it will help me figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life." After graduation, Hinkle is hoping to get an internship and then transition into working a job.

The Bucs will travel to Asheville, North Carolina this Saturday to face the UNCA Bulldogs. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. To watch the game or follow along with live stats visit csusports.com.
