CHARLOTTE, N.C. - On the strength of their play in Charleston Southern's season-opening 1-0 win over Wofford on Sunday, Jazmin Gonzalez and Erin Rush have been selected as recipients of Big South Player of the Week honors.
Gonzalez was named Big South Defensive Player of the Week while Rush garnered Freshman of the Week accolades. This marks the first time the Buccaneers have had a defensive player of the week since Liz-Amanda Brown was chosen on September 26, 2016, and Rush is the first-ever CSU freshman of the week - an award that was first bestowed during the 2016 campaign.
Gonzalez, a senior from Philadelphia, earned the starting job against the Terriers and responded with seven saves to tie her career high first established against Longwood in her freshman season. She had five of her stops in the second half including one with just over two minutes remaining to preserve her second career shutout. Gonzalez recorded her previous clean sheet in a 3-0 victory over Stetson in her college debut in 2015.
Rush, a midfielder from Augusta, was one of three freshmen to gain the opening-day start, and the decision paid dividends for CSU in the 21st minute. Rush's aggressive play enabled her to secure a loose ball near the lower right corner of the goal and slip it past a trio of Wofford defenders to produce the lone tally of the game.
The Bucs are off until Sunday when they host Mercer in their home opener. Kickoff at the CSU Soccer Field is at 1 p.m.
