CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern plays the first of three consecutive home games Sunday when the Buccaneers host Mercer in a 1 p.m. kickoff at the CSU Soccer Field.
Live stats will be available but the game will not be streamed. Following Sunday's game, the Bucs continue their homestand with contests against FIU Friday at 4 p.m. and Ball State a week from tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Bucs and Bears are meeting for the first time since 2013, and Mercer holds a 3-1-2 advantage in the all-time series. Mercer has won the past two meetings, taking a 2-0 win in Charleston in 2012 and a 4-0 victory in Macon the following year.
CSU will be looking to make it two in a row to start the season after winning at Wofford last weekend. Freshman Erin Rush produced the lone goal in the 21st minute, and the defense withstood 18 shots to preserve the shutout. Jazmin Gonzalez made her first appearance in goal since September 2016 and made seven saves for her second career clean sheet.
For their performances, Rush was named the Big South Freshman of the Week, and Gonzalez earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.
Mercer has already played three games including a 3-2 overtime loss at Georgia State on Friday. The Bears opened with a pair of home games and blanked USC Aiken (7-0) and Mississippi Valley State (5-0). Mercer was 10-10-1 a year ago and reached the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament.
Alina McCue leads the Bears with three goals, Brie Pavoli and Payton Schurr have scored twice and Sarah Adcock is the team leader with three assists. Jordyn Ebert has played all 287 minutes in goal and has 10 saves, a .625 save percentage and a 1.88 goals against average.
