CLEMSON, S.C. - Sophie Cloessner led Charleston Southern with a singles win on court no. 2 as the Buccaneers faced off against host Clemson at the Duckworth Winter Classic hosted by the Tigers at the Clemson Indoor Tennis Center. The Tigers took the match overall, 6-1, in CSU's final tune-up before the start of the 2017 regular season.
Cloessner topped CU's Fernanda Navarro on court no. 2 in a three-set match to record the Bucs' lone point in the match. The junior from Wetzlar, Germany, topped her opponent 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, to put CSU on the board.
Clemson took the remaining five singles matches and won two of the three doubles matches to take the overall match on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers took doubles points on courts 2 and 3 to open the match and give Clemson the early 1-0 lead. The duo of Ally Miller-Krasilnikov and Sydney Riley topped CSU's pairing of Mi'Kola Cooper and Yana Morar, 6-0, on court no. 2. The Bucs duo of Kimberley Koerner and Femcke van Rensburg fell to CU's Constanza Gorches and Fernanda Navarro, 6-0, on court no. 3.
The match between CSU's Cloessner and Nicolin Luecke and CU's Ayan Broomfield and Daniela Ruiz went unfinished with the Clemson duo leading 4-2 when play was halted.
Cooper went three sets in her first action since the 2015 season with the Buccaneer senior taking CU's Riley to the limit on court no. 3. Cooper took the opening set 7-5 against the Clemson freshman before Riley took the final two sets 6-3, 7-5, to take the point.
Luecke fell to No. 40-ranked Broomfield on court no. 1 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. CU's Daniela Ruiz topped Koerner on court no. 4, 6-1, 6-2. Morar fell in her first singles action with the Bucs on court no. 5 to Miller-Krasinikov, 6-4, 6-4, while CU's Jenny Moinard topped van Rensburg in straight sets on court no. 6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Buccaneers open the 2017 regular season on the road on Saturday, February 4, as CSU travels to UNC Wilmington. First serve at the UNCW Tennis Complex is set for 1 p.m.
