WTEN Preview: CSU welcomes Gardner-Webb to the Buccaneer Tennis Complex for Saturday afternoon showdown

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern looks to extend its winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Buccaneers host Gardner-Webb in a Big South Conference match-up. First serve at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex is set for 1 p.m.

CSU (5-1, 1-0) puts its five-match winning streak to the test on Saturday afternoon as the Bucs welcome a Gardner-Webb team that was picked seventh in the conference preseason poll. The Runnin' Bulldogs enter the match with a 5-3 record with wins over N.C. Central, Limestone, Queens (N.C.), Big South foe Longwood, and Wofford. The Runnin' Bulldogs are 1-1 in conference play with their loss coming in a 7-0 defeat to Winthrop.

The Bucs and Runnin' Bulldogs have faced off against one common opponent in the 2017 season with both sides taking on Wofford this season. CSU topped the Terriers, 6-1, on February 11 at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex, while GWU defeated Wofford on Thursday afternoon, 5-2.

CSU continued their strong play this past weekend in the Big South opener with the Bucs topping Campbell on February 25. CSU swept all three doubles matches and took all six singles points, including a three-set win by Yana Morar on court no. 6.

Koerner (6-0) and Morar (5-0) both remain undefeated in singles play on the season for CSU, while Cloessner has won five in a row since dropping her season-opening match at UNCW. The top duo of Cloessner/Luecke has also paced CSU's doubles play with five straight wins on court no. 1, while Koerner and van Rensburg have won four straight matches on court no. 3 to aid in the Bucs' wins.

The Buccaneers have won five consecutive matches against the Runnin' Bulldogs. The last time CSU fell to GWU came back in the 2011 Big South Conference Quarterfinals when No. 5 Gardner-Webb prevailed over No. 4 Charleston Southern, 4-3.

Since then, the Bucs have won five straight matches with two 7-0 sweeps over GWU including the teams' last matchup in Charleston in 2015. CSU swept all three doubles courts and won all six singles courts in straight set matches to take the victory.

Gardner-Webb enters the match winners of five of their last six after dropping its first two matches of the season against Davidson and Charlotte.

Saturday's match is CSU's last home match until March 16 as the Buccaneers prepare to embark on a three-match road trip to Virginia to take on Big South opponents Liberty (March 11), Longwood (March 12), and Radford (March 13).
