FARMVILLE, Va. - Charleston Southern closed out the regular season in dominant fashion as the Buccaneers topped Longwood, 6-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Lancer Courts.
Saturday's win gave CSU (15-2, 7-1) a share of their third Big South Conference regular season championship in the past four seasons. The Bucs swept all three doubles courts from the Lancers (6-13, 1-6) and took five of the six singles matches to head into the Big South Women's Tennis Championships on a high note.
CSU and the remainder of the Big South Conference teams will find out their fate this evening as the conference office announces the tournament seeding for next week's conference championships. The Big South Women's Tennis Championships will be held at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, N.C. on the campus of Wake Forest University. First round play will start on April 20, while the championship match will be held on Sunday, April 23, with first serve set for noon.
Nicolin Luecke and Sophie Cloessner topped Jamie Breunig and Fallon Burger, 6-2, on doubles court no. 1 to open the match and give CSU the early advantage. Kimberley Koerner and Yana Morar sealed the CSU point on court no. 3 with a 6-3 win over Mason Thomas and Anna Pelak. The Bucs completed the sweep with a 6-4 win by Mi'Kola Cooper and Valeria Koussenkova over Paloma Alatorre and Marija Venta.
Cooper kept the Bucs' winning ways going in singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court no. 3 over Pelak. Luecke, playing her second match on court no. 2, topped Breunig, 6-2, 6-0, to give CSU the 3-0 lead.
Koussenkova secured the CSU win with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court no. 5 over Thomas. Cloessner made it 5-0 Bucs with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Venta on court no. 1. Morar closed out with CSU's final point on court no. 6, 6-4, 6-2.
Alatorre took Longwood's lone point of the match with a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) win on court no. 4 over Koerner.
