CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Charleston Southern senior Valeria Koussenkova was named the Big South Women's Tennis Player of the Week after leading the Buccaneers' efforts for the week of April 10-16.
Koussenkova went through a perfect week going 4-0 in combined singles and doubles to pace the Bucs to a tie for the Big South regular season championships. She completed a perfect 8-0 record in Big South Conference play with straight set wins over opponents from Liberty and Longwood on the weekend as the Bucs closed out the regular season.
Koussenkova put the Bucs on the scoreboard in Friday afternoon's match at the Cook Tennis Center with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Liberty's Mariely Hassey on court no. 5. This came after she and fellow senior Mi'Kola Cooper topped Anna Dollar and Evangeline Crist in doubles play earlier in the match on court no. 2, 7-5.
On Saturday, Koussenkova and Cooper completed the CSU sweep in doubles play with a 6-4 win on court no. 2 over opponents from Longwood. She followed up with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mason Thomas on court no. 5 to secure the CSU win over the Lancers.
The Bucs open the postseason on Friday morning as No. 2 CSU takes on No. 7 Presbyterian at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
Liberty's Eugenia Camacho was selected the Come Ready Nutrition Freshman of the Week.
