Bucs pick up second Big South victory with 5-2 win over UNC Asheville

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern picked up its second Big South win of the 2018 season as the Buccaneers topped UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex, 5-2.

The Bucs (5-3) took all three doubles matches on the afternoon and four of the six singles points on their way to improving to 2-0 in Big South play on the season. Asheville (5-4, 0-1) suffers its first conference loss of the year.

Yana Morar and Kimberley Koerner put the Bucs in the driver's seat in the match early as the CSU duo topped Emily Sidor and Taylor Love on court no. 3, 6-1. Filippa Ericson and Valeria Koussenkova followed shortly afterward and secured the CSU point with a 6-3 win on court no. 2 over Christin Louw and Lauren Watson-Steele.

The third doubles match went into the tiebreaker as Sophie Cloessner and Madalina Man proved victorious with the 7-6 (7-3) win over Kylee Shipley and Hannah Francisco on court no. 1.

The Bucs started quickly in singles play with Cloessner first off the courts on court no. 1 over Shipley, 6-1, 6-3. Michelle Schmitz followed with her second win in as many days with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Amalie Davidson on court no. 6 to put the Bucs ahead 3-0.

Man secured the CSU win as the freshman took the Bucs' fourth point of the day with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court no. 4 over Francisco. Ericson followed shortly afterward with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Watson-Steele on court no. 3 for the Bucs' final point of the day.

Sidor took the Bulldogs' first point of the day with a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9) win on court no. 2 over Koussenkova. Louw won a tough match over Koerner on court no. 5 in the tiebreak as well with the 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10) to close out play.
