Bucs top Division III power Emory on Friday afternoon

ATLANTA, Ga. - Charleston Southern overcame Division III power Emory on the road on Friday afternoon as the Buccaneers topped the Eagles at Wood PEC, 5-4.

The Bucs (10-5) topped the Eagles (6-3) after falling in two of the three doubles matches as CSU took singles wins on courts 1, 2, 4, and 6 to defeat Emory. Emory, the no. 1 ranked team in Division III and the two-time reigning Indoor National Champion, took two of the three doubles matches and singles wins on courts 3 and 5 in the loss.

Katie Chang and Daniela Lopez opened play with an 8-3 win on doubles court no. 3 over the CSU duo of Michelle Schmitz and Kimberley Koerner. CSU secured its lone doubles point on court no. 2 with Filippa Ericson and Valeria Koussenkova topping Anna Fuhr and Stephanie Taylor, 8-6.

Emory's Bridget Harding and Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico held off CSU's Sophie Cloessner and Madalina Man on court no. 1 in a highly contested match. The Eagles took the 9-8 (7-3) win in the tiebreaker to hold the 2-1 lead after doubles play.

Man tied the match up on court no. 4 to open singles play as the Bucs evened the score following her 6-1, 6-4 win over Taylor.

Emma Perelman swung the advantage back to the Eagles with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Koerner on court no. 5. Schmitz evened the match again with a 6-4, 7-5 win on court no. 6 against Chang to put the match tied up at 3-3 with the top three courts still in play.

Koussenkova put the Bucs in the lead for the first time on the afternoon with a tough three-set win over Harding on court no. 2. Koussenkova took the opening set, 6-4, before Harding responded with a 6-4 win in the second frame. Koussenkova took the match with the 6-3 victory in frame three to give CSU the 4-3 lead.

Lopez tied the match back up again with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ericson on court no. 3 to send everyone over to court no. 1 with the match even at 4-4.

Cloessner rallied back against Gonzalez-Rico to clinch the match for CSU. After falling, 6-2, in the first set, Cloessner rebounded with a 7-5, 6-2 win over the final two sets to secure the Bucs' 10th win of the season.
