Bucs post strong showing on first day of CSU Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern posted a strong showing on the first day of the CSU Invitational at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. Overall, the Bucs recorded four doubles victories and a trio of singles wins to highlight their efforts in their first event of the fall.

The first day featured two doubles rounds and one singles round as individuals from host CSU, College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, and Charlotte all competed on Friday afternoon.

Liz Williams and Michelle Schmitz picked up their first doubles win of the season in the first round as the tandem topped CofC's Clara Errard and Emma Scott, 6-3. Newcomers Nevena Georgieva and Tiffany Pyritz were also victorious in the first round with a 6-1 win over CofC's Ava Turner and Catalina Medici.

Filippa Ericson and Madalina Man were unsuccessful in the first round match with a 6-3 loss to CofC's Eva Nyikos and Anastasia Palaska. The CSU duo bounced back for their first doubles win of the fall in the second round with a 6-1 win over Georgia Southern's Arianne De Winter and Paula Boixader.

The doubles duo of Kimberley Koerner and Yana Morar struggled on the opening day with a pair of doubles losses. Koerner and Morar fell in their first match to CofC's Turner Yates and Christi Woodson, 6-2. The duo also fell to Georgia Southern's Luisa Hrda and Mila Hartig, 6-3, in the second round.

Georgieva and Pyritz fell in their second round doubles match as well with a 6-3 loss to CofC's Woodson and Yates.

Tyler Kirk and Grace Waldron picked up CSU's final doubles win of the afternoon in the second round with a 6-1 win over CofC's Turner and Medici.

Ericson, Man, and Williams all recorded individual singles wins for the Bucs in the first round in the final matches of the day. Ericson topped De Winter in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Man defeated Hrda in the third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 6-7, 10-1. Williams rounded out the wins with a three-set victory over CofC's Medici, 3-6, 7-5, 10-1.

Play continues on the second and final day of the CSU Invitational tomorrow morning starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. There is one doubles round and two singles rounds scheduled to wrap up the action on the weekend.
