The pair's individual accomplishments highlighted the Bucs' first competition slate under head coach Anca Dumitrescu and provided solid testing and experience for the squad heading into the spring championship season.
Singles Flight Champions
Pyritz concluded a strong fall freshman season finishing as a co-Flight 2 singles champion over the two-day event. Pyritz opened the weekend with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Liberty's Grace Hashiguchi. She followed up with a three-set win over Presbyterian's Beth Taylor, rallying for the 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory.
Kirk also picked up a pair of wins in singles play to be named co-Flight 5 singles champion. The sophomore topped Presbyterian's Shelley Ray in her first match on Saturday morning, 6-3, 6-4. She rallied back in a three-set match against USC Upstate's Ana Boza, 2-6, 7-5, 10-7, to take the title.
Schmitz and Korner fell in their opening match to Furman's Kozarov/Melviille, 6-2. The CSU duo also dropped a 6-0 decision to Wingate's Verpelli/Rudnko, before rallying to take a 6-1 win over USC Upstate's Acuna/Boza in the South Consolation bracket.
Ericson and Man topped Upstate's Acuna/Boza in their opening match of the weekend, 6-2. The CSU duo dropped a 6-1 decision to Presbyterian's Johnson/Calais to get bumped to the North Consolation bracket. The duo wrapped up the weekend with a 7-5 win over UNC Wilmington's Barisano/Muller-Hughes.
Pyritz/Williams dropped their opening match in doubles play to Columbus State's Tilgner/Paz, 6-4. CSU's doubles team bounced back with a 6-2 win over Upstate/s Saldh/Zarama. The Bucs closed out the weekend with a 6-4 win over Kennesaw State's Jarret/Nash.
Van Rensburg/Morar opened play with a 6-4 win over Wingate's Hsu/Marks. The duo fell to Kennesaw State's Cantrell/Reilly, 6-3, in the second round. In the final round, the Bucs' duo fell to the combined team of Hyche/Ravindran, 6-3.
Waldron/Kirk fell to USC Upstate's Hellberg/Jardim, 6-2 in their opening match. The CSU duo drew a bye in round two, before falling to Kennesaw State's Cantrell/Reilly, 6-2, in the final round.
Saturday's doubles rounds saw the coaches try a few new combinations with the rosters.
CSU's duo of Madalina Man/Tiffany Pyritz topped PC's Patton/Leeman, 7-5. The duo of Koerner/Morar fell to Upstate's Saldh/Zarama, 7-5. Ericson/Williams dropped a 6-4 decision to UNCW's Horn/Matute. Waldron/Kirk picked up a 6-4 victory over PC's Lacey/Ray. Van Rensburg/Schmitz rounded out the doubles competition with a 6-4 win over Wingate's Homan/Cecceroni.
Ericson and Man battled through the competition in the Singles Flight 1. Ericson topped PC's Tracy Johnson in the first round, 7-5, 7-5, before falling to Wingate's Alisa Rudenko, 3-6, 7-6, 10-5, in the bracket championship. Man topped Wingate's Michaela Verpelli, 7-5, 6-0, before falling to PC's Sydney Patton, 6-3, 6-2, in another bracket championship match.
Along with Pyritz, Williams also took on the field in the Singles Flight 2 bracket. Williams dropped a 6-3, 0-6, 11-9 match to Kennesaw State's Kendall Nash in a three-set thriller. She fell, 6-3, 6-2, to USC Upstate's Zarama in the consolation championship.
Morar and Schmitz took on the Singles Flight 3 bracket. Morar fell to Furman's Mary Hunter Hyche in a three-set match, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4. She followed up falling to PC's Sam Calais, 6-4, 6-4. Schmitz topped USC Upstate's Noelia Acuna, 4-6, 6-0, 10-3 to advance to the bracket championship. She fell to Wingate's Sydney Homan in a tough three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8.
Koerner and Van Rensburg battled through the Singles Flight 4 matchups. Koerner topped Columbus State's Natalia Kattah Paz, 6-4, 6-4, to advance to the flight championship match. She dropped a 3-6, 7-6(6), 10-7 decision to PC's Katie Thompson to close out her weekend. Van Rensburg also advanced to the championship side with a 6-1, 6-7, 10-7 win over Furman's Eva Borders. Her efforts also were upended in three sets to UNCW's Lea Dubois-Rebiere, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Waldron closed out the Bucs in action in Flight 5. Waldron topped Wingate's Marisa Marks in the first match, 6-0, 6-1. She dropped a 6-3, 6-0 decision to Upstate's Elin Hellberg to close out the weekend.
Charleston Southern wrapped up the fall section of the 2018 schedule. CSU is back in action in Spring 2019 starting at Clemson University on Friday, January 18.
