Buccaneers fall on road to open weekend road trip at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Charleston Southern fell to host Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center on Friday afternoon as the Buccaneers dropped a 6-1 decision to the Paladins.

Filippa Ericson picked up her first singles win of the season for CSU (0-2) to put the Buccaneers on the board against a tough Furman (3-0) team that remained undefeated in 2019.

The Bucs dropped all three doubles matches early in the afternoon to stake Furman to the 1-0 lead. Michelle Schmitz and Liz Williams fell to FU's Madison Dillon/Georgie Walker on court no. 3, 6-3, in the first result of the day. Katarina Kozarov/Julia Adams topped CSU's Madalina Man/Tiffany Pyritz on court no. 1, 6-4, to secure the doubles point.

Ericson and Kimberley Koerner dropped a 6-3 decision on court no. 2 against Taylor Melville/Carol Kerman in the final match of doubles play as Furman went into singles action leading 1-0.

Dillon topped Williams on court no. 4, 6-0, 6-2, to put the Paladins ahead 2-0 early into singles action. Adams topped Koerner on court no. 3, 6-4, 6-3, to swing Furman within clinching the match.

Ericson put the Bucs on the scoreboard with a straight set win on court no. 2 to top Melville. The CSU senior topped her opponent 6-2, 6-3, to keep the match alive.

No. 30 Kozarov topped Man on court no. 1, 6-2, 6-3, to secure the match win for the host Paladins. Walker defeated Schmitz on court no. 5, 6-0, 6-2, before all eyes turned to a tough-fought match on court no. 6.

Tiffany Pyritz took the first set over Furman's Eva Borders, 6-4, before falling to her counterpart by a matching 6-4 in the second set to send the match into the tiebreaker. Pyritz fought hard but fell short, 10-8, in the tiebreaker set on court no. 6.
