WTEN PREVIEW: Bucs host home opener Saturday against UNCW; head to Patriots Point on Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern women's tennis is back in action this weekend as the Buccaneers host UNC Wilmington on Saturday in its 2019 home opener, while also traveling to College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon.

The Buccaneers are coming off their first win of the 2019 season as CSU topped USC Upstate this past Saturday to move to 1-0 in Big South play. CSU rallied back after falling in the doubles point with singles wins on courts 2, 3, 4, and 5, to claim the conference victory.

Tiffany Pyritz claimed conference Freshman of the Week honors after her match-clinching win over the Spartans. The Wake Forest, N.C. native topped her Spartans' opponent, 6-2, 7-6, to secure the Bucs' fourth point of the day.

The win snapped a four-match losing streak for Charleston Southern as the Buccaneers bounced back from a difficult opening schedule. CSU dropped contests to Clemson, Furman, Louisville, and Charlotte, before picking up the road win over the Spartans.

Saturday's contest against UNC Wilmington begins a stretch of six home matches over the next eight contests. The home stretch includes Big South matches against Hampton (Mar. 2), Campbell (Mar. 4), Gardner-Webb (Mar. 9), and Presbyterian (Mar. 19).

Several Bucs picked up their first singles wins of the season this past weekend with Kimberley Koerner, Madalina Man, Pyritz, and Michelle Schmitz all proving victorious over their opponents on Saturday. The doubles duo of Koerner/Ericson also picked up their second win of the season to lead CSU.

This weekend marks the final stretch prior to the bulk of Big South Conference play for the Buccaneers.

Scouting UNC Wilmington
The Seahawks will first face off against College of Charleston on Friday afternoon at Patriots Point prior to making their visit to the Buccaneer Tennis Complex. UNC Wilmington enters the weekend on a four-match winning streak having previously topped Kennesaw State, N.C. Central, Georgia Southern, and Campbell.

The Seahawks' latest win came at the hands of a Big South opponent as UNCW topped the Cambell Camels on February 10 on the UNCW Courts. The 4-3 decision went the Seahawks' way with Maddy Muller-Hughes' three-set win on court no. 1 providing the difference in the victory.

The Camels and Bucs are just two of the Big South teams the Seahawks will face this season. UNC Wilmington will also battle against USC Upstate on March 14 down in Orlando, Fla.

Sabrina Barisano (6-0) and Maddy Muller-Hughes (5-0) are both undefeated in singles play on the season. Rachel Marthinsen (4-2) also boasts a winning record on the year.

In doubles play, the duo of Barisano/Muller-Hughes is the top tandem with a 5-1 record in 2019. Lea Dubois-Rebeiere/Marthinsen are 4-2 overall lining up primarily on court no. 3.

Scouting College of Charleston
College of Charleston will face off against UNC Wilmington on Friday afternoon prior to their Sunday afternoon matchup against the Buccaneers. It will mark CSU's first trip to the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point in recent history as they continue the Bucs' first year under Head Coach Anca Dumitrescu.

College of Charleston boasts a 2-3 overall record on the year with wins over USC Upstate and Georgia Southern. The Cougars' three losses have come against nationally recognized opponents in Wake Forest, Clemson, and Winthrop.

In their latest matchup against Georgia Southern, freshman Clara Errard provided the match-clinching point in singles play as the Cougars took the come-from-behind win over the Eagles. CofC picked up wins on courts 1, 4, 5, and 6, on their way to the victory over the Eagles.

CSU and Winthrop are two of the Big South opponents CofC is facing this season. The Cougars will also face off against Gardner-Webb as they host the Runnin' Bulldogs on March 10.

Turner Yates leads the team with a 3-1 record in singles play. Christi Woodson also paced the Cougars with a pair of singles wins on the year. Three different doubles tandems have posted wins on the year.
