DES MOINES, IA. - Charleston Southern upcoming junior Meme Jean will take the track against her idols - and now main competition - this weekend at the 2013 USA Track and Field Championships, which run through Sunday at Drake University.
Jean will run the 100-meter hurdles on Friday in the prelims, with the semifinals and finals coming on Saturday. Friday's prelims are at 6:15 p.m. ET. She is one of 29 hurdlers in the field. She will need to finish in the top 16 to advance to Saturday's semifinals. The top three from Saturday's finals advance to the 2013 World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
Jean is facing some of her idols in this weekend's field.
World Champion Lolo Jones, Olympic Gold Medalist Dawn Harper, 2011 USA Outdoor Champion Kellie Wells, and 2013 NCAA Champion and record holder Brianna Rollins will be in the field, along with Jean.
The upcoming junior and Big South record holder in the 100-meter hurdles, Jean will likely need to shatter her record of 13.25 seconds in the event to advance against the star-studded field, but the experience will be invaluable for years to come.
"Going to the U.S. Nationals is really about (Jean) running against her idols," CSU head coach Tosha Ansley said on Wednesday. "The experience is about learning to compete against the best, making her own way in the sport, and coming into her own."
Jean is the first Big South female hurdler to compete at the U.S. Nationals She reached the NCAA Championships earlier this month in Eugene, Ore. She finished 17th and came up .01 seconds shy of her own CSU and Big South record.
