CHARLESTON, S.C. - It is an important weekend for Charleston Southern Track and Field as the Buccaneers make the trek to Lynchburg, Va. and the Liberty Indoor Track Complex for the Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships presented by Musco Sports Lighting and UCS. The two-day event begins on February 23-24 held on the campus of Liberty University.
The indoor championships feature eight teams on the women's side and seven teams on the men's side as athletes from Campbell, Charleston Southern, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Liberty, Radford, UNC Asheville, and Winthrop will compete on the track this weekend.
Admission is free to the two-day event, while live results will be posted on both the web and available on mobile devices. The full schedule of events for the men's championships can be found HERE. The full schedule of the women's championships can be found HERE.
The Flames added the state-of-the-art indoor track facility to its list of numerous new athletics complexes in recent years when the Liberty Indoor Track Complex opened in January 2017. The track itself is the facility's most dynamic feature and one of only a handful of indoor tracks in the U.S. to offer a six-lane, 200-meter, hydraulically banked oval.
Other such tracks are located at Navy, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas A&M and VMI. VMI and Liberty are the only schools to have banked tracks that feature a specially formulated surface manufactured by Beynon, the company that resurfaced Liberty's outdoor Matthes-Hopkins Track Complex and the University of Oregon's Hayward Field, site of the United States Olympic Trials in 2008, 2012 and 2016.
The track will be a familiar surface for the Buccaneers as CSU competed in Lynchburg on February 10 at the Liberty Elite Invitational. Niegel Simmons and Timothy Davis paced the field in the men's long jump at the event to highlight CSU's appearance at the event.
Simmons returns to the field as the reigning Big South indoor long jump champion. The sophomore recorded a final jump of 7.28m to out-pace the field on his way to the individual title on the men's side.
Alexus Foreman will also look to reprise her place on the podium this weekend after finishing second overall in the women's shot put. Foreman recorded her longest throw of the day with a distance of 13.43m and it nearly stood the entire event prior to Liberty's Dasiana Larson topping the field on her final throw.
Frankie Thomas and Joshua Paramore will also look to get back on the podium for the Bucs this weekend. Thomas finished third overall in the high jump last season, while Paramore was third in the men's 60m dash.
The Buccaneers have a number of athletes that dot the top five of the conference standings heading into the premier indoor event of the season.
Among the notable CSU athletes include a pair of athletes who sit atop the Big South rankings in their events heading into the postseason.
Freshman sprinter Diamond Rush turned in the fastest time of the season in the women's 60m dash. Rush earned conference Athlete of the Week honors following her time of 7.67 at the VMI Team Challenge.
High jumper Frankie Thomas also sits atop the Big South rankings following his performance at the Clemson Orange and Purple. The sophomore cleared 2.00m to take the top spot in the event heading into Lynchburg.
