TRACK Preview: Bucs hit road to Columbia for the Gamecock Invitational

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern will return to familiar ground this weekend as the Buccaneers take on the field at the Gamecock Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina. The one-day event will occur at the Morris and Sheila Cregger Track.

The Bucs were in Columbia two weeks ago for the Weems Baskin Invitational as the team split up to compete at South Carolina, as well as the ADIDAS Winthrop Invitationals.

The jumpers and the throwers had their time to shine at the Cregger Track with Milan Williams (hammer throw), Alexus Foreman (shot put) and Timothy Davis (triple jump) all recording top-three finishes over the two-day event.

Williams opened the competition on the first day with a throw of 50.71m to take third in the women's hammer throw. Foreman followed up on the second day with a third-place finish in the women's shot put after achieving 13.33m on her third attempt of the event. Davis added a third-place finish in the men's triple jump after clearing 14.40m on his first attempt.

The Bucs are coming off one of their strongest performances in 2018 as three school records fell this past weekend at the Florida Relays. The CSU records in the women's 1500m race, the men's 5000m race, and the men's shot put to highlight the weekend in Gainesville, Fla.

Freshman Fearghal Curtin opened the event with a school-record mark in the men's 5000m race. The freshman from Cork, Ireland placed second overall in the field with a blistering pace of 14:02.88 to set the school record by nearly 14 seconds.

Senior Georgina Russell followed up on the second day by shattering the record in the women's 1500m race. Russell's time of 4:33.00 won the third heat and eclipsed the previous mark by nearly six seconds.

Sophomore Ryan Spiecha continued the record-setting trend for the Bucs on the final day of the Florida Relays in the men's shot put. The Fayetteville, Ga. native cleared 16.10m on his final attempt to break a record that had stood since the 1972 S.C. State Championships.

The Gamecock Invitational marks the midway point of the 2018 outdoor schedule for the Buccaneers this season. The Bucs still have three more meets on the schedule – the Charlotte Invitational (April 13-14), the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Invitational (April 20-21) and the CSU Tune-Up (May 2) – prior to the Big South Outdoor Championships at High Point on May 9-11.

The events are scheduled to begin with the women's hammer throw and the men's javelin throw at 9 a.m. Track events are scheduled to start with the women's 5000m race at 10 a.m.
