TRACK Preview: Bucs ready for Big South Outdoor Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The postseason is here for the Charleston Southern Track & Field teams as the Buccaneers prepare to make the trip to High Point, N.C. and Vert Stadium this week. The 2018 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships presented by Musco Sports Lighting and UCS runs from Wednesday, May 9, through Friday, May 11.

The women's field features teams from eight different institutions with Campbell, CSU, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Liberty, Radford, UNC Asheville, and Winthrop all taking on the field over the three-day event. The men's field features seven Big South schools with Campbell, CSU, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Liberty, UNC Asheville, and Winthrop competing.

Fans can follow the action via the Big South's social media platforms on Twitter (@BigSouthGameDay), Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Admission is $5 each day and can purchased at the gate.  Students will be admitted free with student ID.

The Buccaneers' men's track and field team will look to build off a strong outdoor campaign as CSU will attempt to keep the momentum going following a third-place finish at the Indoor Championships back in February. CSU was represented on the podium nine times over the two days with strong performances in multiple disciplines including high jump, hurdles, weight throw, distance, and relay.

The CSU women's team displayed its talent at the Indoor Championships with four podium finishes, all recorded by underclassmen. Diamond Rush (60m), Milan Williams (weight throw), Tamara Damjanovic (triple jump) and Caroline Edmondson (heptathlon) finished second in their respective events to cap a strong indoor season and the quartet continued their momentum into the outdoor season.

CSU's talent abounds on both rosters this season following strong experience gained through a challenging spring slate. The Bucs enter the conference championships with athletes dotted in the Big South's top 10 in nearly every single event including the reigning Fastest Man in 2017 100m dash champion Joshua Paramore, as well as the highest-rated high jumper in 2018 in Frankie Thomas (2.05m)

Athletes to Watch
Frankie Thomas – Sophomore – High Jump, Long Jump

One of the more exciting high jumpers to come through Charleston Southern in recent history, sophomore Frankie Thomas picked a good time to shine heading into the conference meet following his best performance of the season at the CSU Tune-Up. The Simpsonville, S.C. native recorded his best mark of the season at 2.05m to take the top placement in the Big South rankings. He's one of only two athletes in the conference to clear two meters on the season with Winthrop sophomore Jalen Hodges posting a mark of 2.02m at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier. Thomas finished second last season at the Outdoor Championships at CSU with a height of 2.07m.

JP Caglione – Discus, Hammer Throw, Shot Put
Twice finished on the podium at the Big South Indoor Championships in both the shot put and the weight throw, Caglione continued to show progress throughout the Outdoor season in both disciplines. The Viera, Fla. native sits in the top five in each of the three throwing categories including second in hammer (53.61m), fourth in shot put (15.93m), and fifth in discus (42.49m) heading into the conference meet.

Fearghal Curtin – 1500m, 5000m
A talented freshman from Cork, Ireland, Fearghal Curtin's impact on the CSU distance program cannot be understated this season. After helping lead the Bucs to a third-place finish in the 2017 Big South Cross Country Championships, Curtin continued his pace on the oval placing third overall in the men's 3000m race at the Indoor Championships. He is currently ranked 32nd overall in the NCAA East Region in the men's 5000m race (14:02.88) and sits fifth in the Big South in the 1500m and third in the 5000m.

Caroline Edmondson – 100m hurdles, 400m hurdles, high jump, 4x400m relay
CSU's do-everything athlete on the women's side, Edmondson has already made her mark in the Buccaneers' record books heading into her second Big South Outdoor Championships. One year after finishing second overall in the Big South in the heptathlon with 4571 total points, Edmondson has built a strong spring campaign and will be featured in four different events this week. The Dickson, Tenn. native enters the postseason second in the Big South in the 400m hurdles and fourth in the 100m hurdles making strides in both events throughout the year.

Jasmine Pilgrim – 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay
One of three seniors on the CSU women's track and field team, Jasmine Pilgrim looks to wrap up a decorated career with the Bucs entering the championships. The Spartanburg, S.C. enters as one of the favorites in both the women's 100m and 200m dashes, as well as occupying a key spot in both of CSU's top relay teams. She has finished second in the Big South in the women's 100m dash in each of the last two outdoor championship events and posted the second-fastest time in the conference at 11.96 seconds at the Georgia Tech Invitational. She's also fourth in the conference in the women's 200m, and played a key role in last year's 4x100m relay championship team.

Milan Williams – Discus, Shot Put, Hammer Throw
One of CSU's top throwers on the women's side will take on the field in three different events over the weekend. The sophomore from Suwanee, Ga. is strongest in the hammer throw which is scheduled to take place on Friday afternoon on the final day of competition. Williams enters the week fourth in the conference with a distance of 54.98m, while also sitting in the top 10 in the discus and the shot put.
