ROCK HILL, S.C. - Charleston Southern was unable to hold off a determined Winthrop team on Tuesday night in the Winthrop Coliseum as the Buccaneers fell in five sets to the Eagles, 25-23, 24-26, 25-15, 21-25, 15-10.
Brooke Monssen fell one shy of her season-high with 19 kills in the match and hit .326 from the floor to lead CSU (11-14, 6-3) on the evening. Addison Kaderli added 13 kills and 19 digs, while Madison Martin led the Bucs' back line with 27 digs on the night. Naiomi Rivera set up the CSU offense with a season-high 27 assists in her first collegiate start.
Emma Weakland paced Winthrop (10-16, 1-9) to their first Big South win of the season with 19 kills, while Sammie-Jo Ah-Hong (11), Brianna Gray (11) and Kelsey Schroll (10) were all in double-digits in the kills category. Siani Yamaguchi set up the WU offense with 30 assists, while Schroll was the digs leader with 27 in the match.
The Buccaneers continue Big South play on the road this weekend as CSU travels to High Point and Campbell this weekend. CSU takes on HPU on Friday night with first serve set for 7 p.m. The Bucs and Camels close out the weekend on Saturday with service set for 2 p.m.
CSU erased a 17-14 lead late in the first set with a 3-0 run sparked by a Monssen and Connor Malone kills. Winthrop rebuilt their advantage late as the Eagles went up 24-20 following a CSU attack error. The Bucs staved off set point three separate times with Logan Windsor and Hannah Western both placing in kills before WU's Sydney Gunter closed out the 25-23 Winthrop set win.
The Buccaneers rallied from a 17-13 deficit in the second set with an 8-2 run on Taylor Marin and Kylie Klein's service as CSU built a 21-19 lead. Winthrop rallied back and held set point at 24-23 following a McDaniel kill. A WU attack error swung serve back to CSU and Monssen put in the set-clinching point two plays later to give the Bucs the 26-24 win and the 1-1 tie at the break.
Winthrop steadily built a double-digit advantage in the third set on their way to recording the 25-15 set win. The Eagles stretched an 11-7 lead to a 24-14 edge before a CSU service error gave WU the set win.
Monssen carried the Buccaneers in the fourth set as CSU rallied to send the match into the fifth frame. The freshman outside hitter recorded seven kills in the set to pace the Bucs offense, while Klein and Martin had two service aces apiece. The Eagles fought back late in the set to narrow CSU's lead from 24-18 to 24-21 before Windsor put home the final kill to clinch the Bucs win.
Winthrop held the 8-7 advantage at the crossover in the fifth set and utilized a 4-1 run spurred by a pair of Gray kills in building a four-point lead over CSU. Kaderli added a pair of late kills to keep the match alive, but a Bucs' service ace ended the match in favor of the Eagles.
