Mooberry, Buccaneers release 2017 volleyball schedule

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Trips to Western Carolina, UAB, and Elon, as well as a local tournament at The Citadel highlight the 2017 Charleston Southern volleyball schedule, head coach Christy Mooberry announced on Monday morning.

The Bucs travel to road tournaments hosted by Western Carolina, UAB, Elon, and The Citadel to open the 2017 season. CSU will host South Carolina State and Savannah State, as well as the full Big South Conference slate in 2017.

2017 Charleston Southern Volleyball Schedule

"The preseason schedule will test us quickly and help us prepare for conference," Mooberry said on the schedule. "We're on the road for most of the preseason, which will be an opportunity for us to draw the parallel for our conference matches on the road back to back, something we need to be mentally and physically prepared for in conference play."

She continued, "We also have three matches in Charleston during the preseason, which will be nice for our local fan base and to continue to work towards our goals prior to conference play."

The Buccaneers return 11 players from last year's squad that advanced back to the postseason for the second consecutive season in 2016.

Seniors Siraya Windsor and Kylie Klein, juniors Madison Martin, Addison Kaderli, and Hannah Western, as well as sophomores Logan Windsor, Naiomi Rivera, Brooke Monssen, Rachel Smith, Macey LaPorte, and Caitlyn Michalski. CSU also adds five newcomers to the mix as the Bucs look to take the next step in 2017.

"Our starting group last year consisted largely of freshmen and sophomores," Mooberry said. "To have all of those players have one more year under their belt and the experience of last year will be significant."

She continued, "We're also looking forward to having senior Siraya Windsor and junior Hannah Western back after working through some tough injuries.  Brooke Monssen has spent much of the summer training with the FCA Volleyball program out in California and I believe her experience there will be a huge positive aspect on our team this season as well.  We have a handful of athletic freshmen coming in this year that will challenge our current group and that's always a good thing."

CSU opens the season on a seven-match road trip with the Western Carolina Tournament, a match at College of Charleston, and the UAB Tournament.

The Bucs open the year for the second straight season in Cullowhee, N.C. as CSU takes part in the Western Carolina Tournament. CSU will take on the host Catamounts, Jacksonville State, and Towson on August 25-26 to start the season.

CSU returns to Charleston to take on local rival CofC on August 29 at TD Arena. The Bucs continue their season-opening road trip in Birmingham, Ala. taking on host UAB, Georgia State, and Western Illinois on September 1-2.

CSU's home opener is set for Tuesday, September 5, against South Carolina State, the first of two home matches against MEAC schools in the 2017 season. The Bucs host Savannah State the following Tuesday inside the Buc Dome.

The Bucs close out the preseason tournament schedule on September 8-9 at the Elon Tournament and September 15-16 at The Citadel Tournament. CSU will take on Elon, Norfolk State, and N.C. Central in the first tournament. The Bucs take on Alabama A&M, Jacksonville State, and The Citadel in McAlister Field House.

CSU starts Big South Conference play as the Bucs travel to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian on September 19. The Bucs follow up with four straight home matches from September 23-October 3 taking on High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian, and Campbell.

A three-game road trip spanning October 7-14 includes trips to UNC Asheville, Gardner-Webb, and Liberty. The Bucs return home for a weekend series against Radford and Liberty on October 20-21, before hitting the road for a midweek match against Winthrop on October 24.

Senior Day for CSU is set for a Friday night match on October 27 against UNC Asheville. The Bucs' home season finale is a Halloween matchup against Winthrop.

The Bucs close out the regular season with three straight road matches. CSU travels to High Point (Nov. 3), Radford (Nov. 4), and Campbell (Nov. 11).
