Burkholder earns All-Academic honors; Bucs finish ninth at Big South Women's Cross Country Championships

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Charleston Southern finished ninth in the field at the 2016 Big South Conference Women's Cross Country Championships held Friday morning at Asheville Christian Academy. The Buccaneers finished with a team score of 260 overall on the six-kilometer course.

Senior Madison Burkholder received Big South All-Academic Team honors following the meet and was CSU's top finisher at the conference's premier event. The Boiling Springs, S.C. native turned in her best time of the season at 20:25.18 to finish 41st among the field on the course. She is currently pursuing a degree in Kinesiology at CSU and received All-Academic honors for the first time.

Freshman Kaitlyn Black was six seconds off her best time of the season and crossed the line with a time of 20:47.22, finishing 47th overall. Black's season-best time came at the Will Wilson Citadel Invitational where she led the Bucs with a time of 20:41.0.

Liberty's Brant Tolsma was voted the Big South Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year, while Maritim was tabbed the conference's Runner of the Year.  Paxton was named Big South Freshman of the Year, and Liberty's Kat Bouton earned Big South Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors from the Big South sports information directors.

Liberty collected 38 points to win its first Big South crown since 2012 and ninth overall.  High Point was second in the standings with 45 points, followed by Campbell in third place with 73 points.  Winthrop took home fourth with 96 points, while host UNC Asheville claimed the No. 5 position as it finished the meet with 110 points.

Junior Kaitlyn Keene and freshman Bethany Thornhill finished back-to-back in 66th and 67th overall among the field. Keene crossed the line with a time of 21:49.12, while Thornhill was two-tenths of a second back at 21:50.92.

Sophomore Traci Drayton and freshman Areale Frazier rounded out the group for the Bucs on the course. Drayton finished 75th with a time of 22:42.97, while Frazier crossed in 24:27.97.
