CHARLESTON, S.C. - Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Jim Stintzi announced the 2018 Charleston Southern Cross Country schedule on Tuesday morning. The Bucs will compete in five events in preparation for the Big South Conference Championships held on Friday, October 26 at High Point University.
The Bucs will host their first meet in recent history in the season opener on September 1 to open the cross country season. Stintzi is looking forward to the opportunity to bring the competition back on campus.
"We are very excited to hold our first home cross country meet in recent history, as we host College of Charleston and The Citadel for an early season 'Battle for the Lowcountry'," Stintzi commented. "Our course is very spectator friendly and should produce some fast times."
"Our schedule is one that should help our young teams progress throughout the season," he continued. "It will provide great competition at meets like the Paul Short Invitational and the Winthrop Invitational, as well as prepare us for the Big South Championships."
CSU is also looking to build off one of the most successful seasons in program history as the Buccaneers men's team advanced to the NCAA Southeast Regional for the first time since 1994. The women's team also had two athletes set personal-bests at the NCAA Regionals this past fall.
"While both the men's and women's teams will be very young, we bring an exciting mix of experience and youth into the 2018 season," Stintzi said. "Both Coach Iaun and I are hoping we can build on last year's success and take another step toward building a strong cross country and distance program at CSU."
CSU opens the season with the Buccaneer Invitational on September 1 with the race set to commence at 9 a.m. on the campus of CSU.
Two weeks later, the Bucs hit the road for the Winthrop Invitational on September 15. The meet will serve as a preview for the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted at Winthrop on November 9.
The Bucs make their longest trip of the season to close out the month September 28 at the Paul Short Invitational on the campus of Lehigh University.
CSU continues the schedule with their annual competition down on John's Island on October 6 with The Citadel/CofC Invite.
The final Big South tune-up takes place the following weekend at High Point at the HPU Vert XC Invitational on October 12. The 2018 Big South Cross Country Championships will be hosted at High Point on October 26.
The NCAA Championships are scheduled to be hosted in Madison, Wis. at the University of Wisconsin on November 17.
