Cross Country and Track & Field add eight student-athletes for fall squad

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After a successful 2018 season that saw top-four finishes in the Big South, Charleston Southern Director of Track & Field and Cross Country announced the addition of eight student-athletes Tuesday afternoon.

The Buccaneers added eight student-athletes to their rosters for the upcoming seasons including seven cross country and track athletes and one thrower.

CSU is coming off another strong showing in 2018 with the men's cross country team matching their highest finish in the Big South Conference since the 1994 season, taking home second-place honors. Meanwhile, the women's cross country team took home third-place honors tying the program record for highest finish.

Both track & field programs finished among the top-four at the Big South Outdoor Championships to cap off the 2019 season. The men's team made it back-to-back seasons with a third-place finish while the women's squad took finished fourth headlined by the Big South's Scholar Athlete of the Year Caroline Edmonson.

The women's team added two athletes to their roster including a German National Championship podium finisher in Amelle Vedder and top-10 Mountain East Conference thrower Sarah Cannon. Vedder took home a second-place finish as a member of her high school cross country team at the Lower Saxony State championships while Cannon placed fifth and sixth in the MEC hammer and discus throws in 2018 while at Wheeling Jesuit.

2019-20 Charleston Southern Cross Country and Track & Field Female Athletes

Amelle Vedder—Twist, Germany, Gymnasium Marianum Meppen

  • Competed in the German National Championships and finished as high as fourth twice
  • As a member of her high school cross country squad at Gymnasium Marianum Meppen, Vedder had a podium finish in the Lower Saxony State Championships taking home second-place
  • Posted career-best marks of 57.68 in the 400M, 2:13.69 in the 800M and 4:48.31in the 1500M events as a track & field athlete

Sarah Cannon—Doylestown, Ohio—Wheeling Jesuit University

  • A top-10 athlete in both the discus and hammer throw, Cannon took home a fifth-place finish in the 2018 Mountain East Conference discus event for Wheeling Jesuit University
  • She followed that with a sixth-place finish in the 2018 Mountain East Conference hammer throw
  • Comes to Charleston Southern with career-best throws of 123'0 in discus and 142'2.75" for the hammer throw
