CLEMSON, S.C. - The Charleston Southern Women's basketball team
suffered its first loss of their young season to Clemson University
at a score of 85-52. The loss brings the Buccaneers' record to 1-1
overall (0-0 BSC). The win improves Clemson to 2-0 overall.
Leading the Bucs in scoring was senior guard Kelsey Wasmer. She
had 15 points and eight rebounds on the afternoon.
The Bucs were competitive with the ACC opponent, keeping the
deficit to single digits throughout the first half. A layup from
Wasmer tied the game up at the 12:29 mark in the first half. The
first half ended with the Lady Tiger's lead at seven points at a
score of 31-24. The closest the Bucs got in the second half was at
the 19:25 mark when senior Abby Poole hit a three to cut the lead
to six points.
From that point on the Lady Tiger's size and depth at every
position began to wear the Buccaneers down. The Lady Tigers began
to assert themselves on the offensive glass, gaining second chance
put back opportunities.
The Bucs' incessant ball pressure proved once again to be
difficult for their opponent to deal with on the perimeter. The
Bucs forced 24 turnovers from Clemson for the game.
The Bucs, uncharacteristically, shot a poor percentage from
three-point land. The Tigers on the other hand shot the ball well
from behind the arc. The Lady Tigers shot 52.6% from behind the
three-point line on the day, that included several contested step
back shots.
Leading all scorers was Clemson guard Kirstyn Wright. She had 29
points and shot 5-of-8 from behind the point line.
The Buccaneers will take the court once again at home on Tuesday
against Voorhees College. Tip off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and
will be the first game of a double-header with the CSU men's team
taking on cross-town rival The Citadel at 7:30 p.m.
